I'm interested in getting started in modding

All I have to mod is a broken DS Phat that fell in water and an old GBA. Any tutorials or resources for me to get started with?
Please don't use all the techy terms with me, I'm a real newb at this.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and a GameCube I could possibly use.

GC would be a good start, big, lots of room etc. And you can make some real clean results.

Use the gamecube to put in some LED's(lights), first you gotta grab a soldering iron and get familiar with it.
