Internal TV reciever mod
« on: January 24, 2008, 08:07:52 AM »
So I'm looking at possibly doing this but I had a question...

If I were to hardwire something to the usb port, would keeping regular usb function as easy as sticking a switch in the power circuit of the tv accessory, or would there need to be switches on the data lines as well?

to switch, all you need is a switch on the ground.

Thats what I was hoping. Thanks for the response. Picking up a psp slim bundle in the morning, so I think I might try this mod soon.

Let us all know how it goes, and definitely try to have a camera ready for pics and/or video.

Here's pics of the internals of the One-seg tuner...

Ok... well, I don't know very much about hardware, so I will need someone's help if they can.

In the last picture I believe the usb pins are 5-1 from right to left. There are also 2 other pins, one on each side that connect with the gold contacts on the psp.

Question: Anyone know what those gold contacts are for? Also, I know standard USB has only 4 pins, and this has 5. I read that pin 4 is sometimes connected to pin 5. Anyone know any details on what this means for the connection with the psp?

Pretty sure the left contact is power and the right ground.

If you block off the right contact, the one-seg tuner still works (guess being because there's still ground built in to the usb)

If you block off the left contact, the tuner doesn't work.

UPDATE:

Well, I did a simple test of reception by covering the tuner pcb with electrical tape and just sticking it in the umd drive area. reception gets totally cut off... so some kind of external antenna is required which is what I thought, but hoped wouldn't be true.

There's an extension cable that was just released in Japan that goes from the one seg tuner to the wall cable jack,  using your house's antenna for reception. Don't really see the purpose in this, but whatever... my theory is that the cable itself should act as an antenna and the cable connector can just be cut off.

In any case, this project won't be anywhere near final until some slim full cases are produced. I don't wanna cut up my red slim.  :sadno:

I would build in an antenna that flips up.

BTW, i've got a full case for sale.
