Solar Powered PSP Mod!!!
« on: February 02, 2008, 01:27:24 AM »
yay after a small bit of planning and some soldering i have whipped up a solar panel for the psp  :#1: . Im not sure if this has been done before but this was my own plan (he,he im so proud ) it still has a lo to be done in later designs but yea. soooo...

firstly i grabbed hold of 5 cheapo solar garden lights, wired em up, screwed em onto a plank off wood. Then added a switch and and male plug. Tested it in the sun with a multimeter and whooo :hifive: 14 volts (this will vary on the day, and the solar lights). Pic of panel below

Next i added some AA 2200mah rechargables to a case thing i had around, and hooked it up to a female socket that fitted the solar panel one. Pics below.

Step 3 i unwillingly cut the charger off my USB cable :cry2: and wired it to a Male plug the same as the solar panels.

whoo i was done and it works charging the psp battery!!!

And i found it also worked as Adapter when no battery was in and it would boot up (though it draws a whoping 1watt or somthing when booting up).

and there we go my first solar psp mod i hope you enjoyed. If you have any ideas for upgrades please say.

Next working steps(so far)

-Make it charge while psp is playing
-Add some D size rechargables for extra time

vid hope you like

so you were able to use just the solar panels with no batteries or any other power source? this is a first it been discussed but was found not to be worth it because of power going into. i would like to see a test of a fully empty battery and it charge with the solar power and one with normal ac adapter and see who win my bets on the ac adapter

vid please :) and it would be EVEN cooler if you wired/mounted the whole thing internally :D

yes but you would have to decrease the size by removing some panels meaning less energy

DO I get some credit for this Idea? I did think of it quite a while ago and posted picks of where it could possibly go. I'm glad some one was actually able to make the idea real.  If you didn't see my post about this, I was thinking that you could get 2 strips and place them on the trigger buttons. Then do the wire it to the psps battery compartment.  I don't know how to wire it, but I am fairly certain it would work and I think all the wiring could be internal, which would look great!

yea but it has no real practicality unless your going in the wild and have no electricity then i'll say this is the best mod ever but in reality i can not say that

o i know its cool im just responding to him wondering if he was first. now if this is completely solar powered like it doesnt need a battery and can still play that would be sweet. I'm just saying if its just a charger then its not first but i know I woulndt be able to do this without some research at least gj. sry for sounding like a downer earlier.

nope on a sunny day the 2200mah battery pack may be getting 14 volts but nothing more than 5 ever meets with the psp.

ess:

yer sorry im not sure if im first but it was completly my own design. I did browse several websites and googled it with no luck so yer.

i will post a vid later today
and just for you who want to know the project cost around $30NZL ($23US), where a brought one off amazon costs 29pounds+3.95 shipping (so $64.80 US). Personaly i think mine would be better and once you have built it you know all its ins and outs for repair of upgrade with a brought one you have hardly any knowledge to repair or mod it.

Dude, good to see another New Zealander around. Kickass mod too, but to everyone who's whinging about how they thought it up first, using a solar panel to charge the PSP is like replacing an LED. It's such an obvious idea, there's no need for credit.
