My Wii mod project (UPDATE! Now with video!)
« on: June 05, 2008, 12:50:38 PM »
This is my first attempt at a console mod.  I finally got around to uploading the pictures of what I've done thus far, so I figured I'd start a thread with my progress.

Here's a photoshopped idea of what I'm going for.

When I got down to the motherboard I cut a notch in the metal plate so I could fit some extra wires through.

You can see the extra wires coming from under the mobo.

Finally all back together in the new case.

I cracked it back open last weekend and painted the DVD drive black.  I also cut the case window in it.

What do you think so far?  I'm pretty happy with the progress.

Update!  I've finished wiring all the leds.  I have 4 blues and also 4 UVs on a fader chip.  The UV pulses while the blue stay solid.  It's kinda late, so just pictures for now.  Hopefully I'll have a vid up tomorrow.  What do you think?

I got around to uploading a video.  It's not that great, because I took it with my digital camera.  I'll probably add music or something later just to get rid of the noise.

Looks good, you should put a decal on the window. It will add to the effect

I was thinking about doing that, but I decided that I wanted to showcase all the details and moving parts on the dvd drive, so I bought some UV reactive paint and painted all the little pieces.  Once I put in my UV leds, all the parts will glow blue.

No, not yet.  That will actually be the last thing I put on so I don't scratch it up wiring the leds.

Thanks!  Yeah, it is a wii bit dusty (sorry, couldn't help myself).  I didn't have enough time to clean it first, so I just took some pics really quick.

Thanks.  I cut the window with a 'rotary tool.'  It basically looks like a power screwdriver, but you can put a cut-off wheel on it.  http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00961078000P?vName=Tools&cName=Portable+Power+Tools&sName=Rotary+%26+Spiral+Cutting+Tools
That's the exact one I have.
