what the easiest way

Ive been looking around on the internet for days and i saw all the tutorials out there and i was thinking
is the 555 timer way the easiest and cheapest way to do the rapid fire mod??

because all the other ways, if i want to do it by myself i have to program the chips and whatnot and spend quite a bit of money?

if anyone did it the 555 timer way please let me know, you could be of great help...
