Need help with a LED mod
« on: July 12, 2008, 05:46:21 PM »
sorry if this is in the wrong place.

I want to mod my psp so that instead of the metal ring in the back it is transparent but the PSP logo is still there.
after that I want to put LEDs in there with a switch to turn them on and off. Also I no longer use the UMD drive so the mod can take up the whole UMD area I don't want to remove or change the UMD drive Hardware though. Its a phat PSP by the way.

Pic of the PSP I'm modding:

LEDs that I already have:

ok the transparent thing is called a jewel you can get them here http://wiredinput.com/ShopJewels/index.php and you wont need to change or remove the umd drive and also you will need to cut the umd door so that you can put the jewel and the leds you have are the wrong ones ..... yes they are wrong ones those are 5mm ones ... the ones you need are 0603 smd leds or 0805 also work fine.....

thanks chase for this sig =)
I miss my dragon lol....

the jewel that you suggested looks like it is rounded I want it to be flat and look something like this:(I know it is a terrible drawing)

or

can you recommend a place to buy the LEDs from cuz I found two site one is really hard to navigate and the other one charges $1.35 each for the LEDs

also can you recommend a tut for installing and setting up this type of mod.
I have NO experience with soldering or working with LEDs.
thanks for all the help.

P.S. if you haven't noticed it yet I'm trying to make the PSP into an Ironman theme: red case, gold buttons, blue LEDs. after the LED all I have to do is find a way to put Ironman's face on the back like the god of war PSP.

OK so you wanna do one of the styles of the Ring Of Light
Here is a Tut thanks to 4dP
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fsh7DdoELo
The door is cut out and the plastic is from probably a UMD case the box that is comes in.

And those leds aren't exactly wrong just not very usable in the PSP as there isn't much room you are gonna want to go with a SMD Leds (Surface Mount  Device). And as you will probly find out the most Used SMD Led is the 603 led.
Ill link you to a place that tells you where to find all the things needed for this type of modding.

Its says the best place for leds are Ebay on there and it is one of the best some others are-

http://wiredinput.com/ShopUSA/index.php?cPath=21_31
http://myworld.ebay.com/jeledhk/
http://www.phenoptix.co.uk/SMD_LEDs_s/31.htm

Not sure if you have irons or such but

For soldering iron you will want a 15-20 watt iron
60/40 Rosin Core Solder
Rosin Flux
30 gauge Kynar or magnetic wire

Anything i fogot add

But i hope this is good help

thats the tut i used for my ring of light but i traced the ring onto another umd case and cut it out and glued in the the ring so it was almost flush and when i put the metal ring back it was almost as smooth as it was before i started
