need some help here.
I built the simpler schematic without the zener diodes.
When i launch winpic, the programmer reports that it has been initialized properly.
However, when i read the chip, it always reports read failed or blank, and when I program the chip, it always fails with verify errors,

Any help here is appreciated.

This is the circuit I built
One other thing to note is that instead of the 170 mosfet, I substituted the 2n7000.  I beleive the datasheets are pretty much identical.
not 100% sure though.

Also, the schematic shows programming a 629, however, I'm using this programmer for a 683.  should be fine right ?

that is the one I use, it works with my desktop.

I had a few troubles getting started, thry these two things, then test all your soldering points

first off, in winpic menu, change the device type to JDG, it wont read this you must manually set it.
second, make sure the file path is less than 26 caracters, (C:allusers/documentsandsettings/desktop/.....etc) I drop the hex on my desktop before I open win pic

thoses were the only two problems I had

I am at work and dont have winpic here let me start the download, but yes there should be a device tab, jdg is the type of programer.

Sorry, it is JDM not JDG

not cool, I downloaded the spanish version insted of english by mistake, anyway, after that was corrected, do this:

open win pic
click on configuration tab
click on hardware
select JDM programer---(the default is GTP-usb)

thanks again matt.
So I have that working.  When I click read device, it reads the pic ok.
I still cannot program though.
it looks like I'm making progress.

I am operating this with a laptop and usb-> serial
I'm wondering about voltages.
What voltage should I read on the pins of the chip.  I'm reading about 4v on pin1 and pin4 6v.

Also, on the mosfet.  is the pin out drain, gate, source if we read the schematic left to right ?

so I didn't get this working with the laptop, but I have a pc at work with a serial port.  Hooked it up and the circuit programmed my chip right away.
Something seems off.  Maybe it's my usb-> serial adapter.

At least I know that my circuit is built properly now.
Thanks for all the help!!

Whats up,
I'm going to give this a try and wanted o know if  someone can take a good picture of how the wires connect to everything. I'm not sure that I understand the schematic. Thanks and be easy on me I'm very new to all this.

sure, as long as you pass that 40, wait that was ten years ago, now days we need a cup 2 cups LOL!! I cannot speak for the usb type programmer. and I know a usb to serial adapter wont work. but this works great with a serial port.

***tip for schematics:

when things are drawn on paper its hard to show what conects and what wires pass by each other, when they are usually drawn, the wires that conect are solid threw the intersection (here the conecting intersections are distinguished by red dots) normally when wires just pass over one another the line is not drawn straight through, it looks kind of like this  ]  a bridge if you will is drawn in over the intersection. in this diagram, the intersections, that are not conections, are just drawn straight through with no red dot. make since??

here are some pics:
back:

front

the diagram is fairly straight forward. let me know if you have questions. it is a mess, I threw it together in about 15 mins, not some of my best work by far but it gets the job done.

Ok... I think I get it know. I'm going to try this out this weekend. Thanks for the help. I have another question. I have 2 12F683 chips that have the old COD4 code on them. Can I just delete the old code and flash a new one on the chip?

yes. when you write a new code to the chip, it erases the memory first. what code do you have?

one more ting to look for, the zener, and switching diodes have a certian way they are supposed to go. see the line on the shenatic? that line represents the black line on the diode.

Hi guys, I just wanted to confirm that the usb powerd version does work. I use this programmer now and i  cant say it works 100% but it does code the chips. I am using pic 683's for thsi and they do work. Just felt that i had to clarify this to let you know that it is a working programer
