Why 10ohm resistors?
« on: December 09, 2008, 08:52:49 PM »
All of the tutorials say to use 10ohm resistors.

I'm using the exact same 0603 SMD LED's that everyone else is using, from the same 3.6v+ source.

My LED's are 3.2V, 20mA. When I did the calculations, it says I need an 1/8th watt 22ohm resistor. Why does everyone else use 10ohm?

oh also, as a side note, does it matter if i use Silver-based solder or Resin-based solder?

I bought the silver based >_>

When I use 10 ohm resistors, i notice that my blue and green leds, even though bright get extremely hot, like, hot enough to melt its solder off after a while, not to mention the fact they dont last long

And also, dont use red leds with 10 ohms, they just blow up, i had to learn the hard way lol

I use 50 ohms myself, and sometimes 100 ohms, they may not be as bright (not that much dimmer IMO)

but they dont go way too hot and last longer

Im not so familiar with silver based solder, but id just say, if u have any flux, just use that in conjuction with solder

10ohm is not good. Im not sure why they suggest it but use the correct resistance that you get from your calculations.

Dont just use a 10ohm.

And PhenomenalDesigns  is right on the reds i use 50-100 ohms on red.

Good luck with your mods.

What resistor should be used if I was going to use blue 0603 LEDS?

I use 21 ohms with red led's and they work fine, one can hold their hand on them and they don't feel much if any hotter than the room itself
