This isn't a media player, but very handy for watching movies:

http://www.cccp-project.net/

A good large pack of codecs.

And Yes, WinAMP FTW

Media programs need a decoder (codec) in order to decode and play videos properly.

That is a bunch of free useful codecs.

Comes in handy when pirates from the bay supply you with movies in codecs your media player can't play.

I use foobar2000 when I play games, since it uses almost no resources, and it has configuarable global hotkeys

Other than that I use itunes when designing and web browsing for obvious reasons

P.S: Songbird sucks, i tried it, more glitchy than valve games, and uses about double as much ram as itunes and uses about 5% to 10% of my cpu constantly

For Windows, I have to recommend MediaMonkey, it makes handling a large collection so easy, and is feature-packed.

WinAMP is okay, but a little bit bloated in terms of UI, in comparison to its simplicity. It's lessness is less basically.

VLC has poor quality playback (probably due to the codecs).

If your music collection is a lot like a pile of randomly titled mp3s then WinAMP will be fine (it has good support and customisability). For more expert features foobar2000 and MM are probably better.

cosmetic mods... :censored: 'em
