Where to start?
« on: November 02, 2008, 06:06:44 PM »
I have had an old original xbox lying around.  I have decided to start modding it.  It has never been opened.  It also has never been turned on in the last year or so.  I remember it freezing after playing a few minutes of a game.  I don't know why that would happen, I would imagine it to be the DVD drive.  I was told that I could take it out and only play games from a hard drive.

This is what I want to do with the system:

- be able to run emulators (NES, SNES, N64, etc.)
- be able to run backups (from my own xbox game collection)
- run XBMC (to stream my media and such to it)

What do I need to do those things?  I know there is something I have to do with Splinter Cell.  I do not have that game.  Would anyone be willing to let me borrow their copy to do this?  I would send it back to them as soon as I am done and pay for shipping both ways.

Please help me.

Get the game MechAssault from your local gamestop (It's $3) and make sure the version # end in 1,2,or 4 (I don't remember the exact number, all I remember is it HAD to end in one of those) and it CAN'T be the platinum hits version.
Easiest way.
When you get that, I'll give you the files for the softmod. (I'll host them and PM you.)
Instructions are simple. Make a usb to xbox converter, (Splice a regular xbox controller cable and solder a usb port onto it[one that you can plug a flash drive into] be soldering the colors together [red to red, black to black, white to white, etc] but leave the yellow alone.) and find a compatible usb flash drive(Link to compatibility list) and plug that into your xbox.
The xbox will format it accordingly. Then, just plug it into your computer and install the Action replay software that I'd give you also, and install the drivers with it. You'll then be able to transfer the game same over to your xbox hdd through the memory options.

Once that's done and the save is on there, you just need to start the game up and load the gave save "Linux" or "Run Linux" (Don't remember).
This will boot you into an installer for either UnleashX or EvolutionX dashboards. Once you're done installing that, you're going to need to FTP into your xbox. To do this just use an ethernet cable to connect your xbox to your router and it will assign it an IP address which you can find under System>network. Use your FTP client to ftp to that IP address using xbox as the username and password.
Then you're going to copy the "XBMC" folder over to the E/Apps/ folder and reboot your xbox. Then just go into Apps and click XBMC to run it.

You can also set XBMC as your default Dashboard, but I think it's better to leave UnleashX or Evo-X as your dash and run it as an app.

(BTW, this is all based on if you chose UnleashX, which I suggest using. I have mine setup as a dual boot so I can boot into UnleashX or Evo-X and I much prefer UnleashX more.)

Yep!
To run Emulators just get the emulator for xbox and FTP it into the E/Emulators folder (in its own folder of course). ROMs though, I think they just go into another subfolder in there, I'm not sure. I'll be able to tell you more when I put mine on tomorrow afternoon.

Backups just go in E/Games

To access those, from the main menu in UnleashX just choose Emulators or Games. =D

If I paypal you enough money to send a xbox USB adapter and mech assault, would you send to me?  I would cover shipping both ways, and however much the box cost you.  And if you prefer cash, I could just include it in the box back to you.  I would also send back to you within a day or two.

Uhm...I don't do paypal, and I don't have a usb converter. I modded my xbox to use them. Lol. I don't know what I did with the game, either. I used it and threw it in my closet cuz I don't need it anymore.

My closet is the biggest mess everrrrr.

Items needed

Blank CD
IDE cable

http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=619849

For the tut i followed go here but i did a few of my own steps and add stuff.
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=496263

Okay once you get the xboxhdm and the Nudure
1 unzip all folder to the desktop
2 open up ndure folder and start the program
3 check you xbox version by starting xbox
   ~select settings
   ~System Info
~Wait for the text to scroll until you see
          K:1.00.XXXX.01
          D:1.00.YYYY.01
4.Remeber the K numbers
5. Select your Kernel version in the Ndure installer this is the K number
6. Select any other settings
&. Make sure the xboxhdm setting is selected
9. Then hit next save the files in the /xboxhdm/linux/
10. In the xboxhdm/linux/ directory you will see a  E folder i suggest if you want XBMC to be your default Dash to place all file for that in there from the XBMC folder that you unzipped containing folder like: media, plugins, skin, sound and the most important file "default.xbe"
11. in the xboxhdm directory you will see "make-iso-win" select that and wait
12. there now is a iso file name linux open it up with and iso burring program
13. now here is the fun part make sure you xbox in next to your computer
14. open up you computer with power off disconnect all HDD's
15 open up you xbox and make sure you can remove and replace the IDE cable on the HDD easly.
16 boot you computer and go in to your bios settings
17 make sure boot from CD is first
18 reboot and hit pause break button when computer starts
19 Now boot your xbox and have it hooked up to a tv if possible wait for the screen with xbox  and big "X" pic to show up quickly remove IDE cable.
20 now attach the Xbox HDD to the computers IDE Cable do not do not turn off the xbox
21 now hit the space bar and the HDD should be recognize if not the plug in the HDD back and try to disconnect it When you see the Big "X"
22 once recognized then the xboxhdm cd should boot up select 1 Enter
23 type xbrowser hit enter then go to directory ndure select the ndure script file
24 select option 4 to back up HDD this is a very smart thing to do
25 After that is done Select option 1
26. this will take some time be patient it may seem it is frozen but it is not.
27. now you have soft moded you xbox
28. Optional if you want to have XBMC as you default Dash then do the below steps
~reboot pc after Option 1 finishes
 ~ select option 1
 ~ type xbrowser
~ go to the Directory E were you dragged the XBMC files too
~ Hit the Tab Button and go to the E drive on the xbox and open up dash directory
~ select all files and move them to apps/unleshedx you may have to create a directory unleshedx in the apps folder
~ hit the tab button and begin to copy all the files from the XBMC to E:/dash/
29. shut down computer unplug xbox from the computers IDE cable
30 hook up the xbox IDE cable
31. shut down xbox
32 turn it on and XBMC or UnleshedX  will boot up.
33. If the default Dash starts then you didn't move the XBMC files over correctly.
just hook the xbox up to your computer and boot xboxhdm.

Game exploit is for wusses. but if you want to do it that way be my guest there is nothing wrong with either method. Yes all the files will be in xbins dont make the mistake and use your limit in the first day witch you wont trust me. If you do just log on the the irc channel with a diffrent nick and then poof your back on. the password is allways the same or it was for me no matter what nick i used or computer location.
