Help with Ipod touch 1st gen 8gb
« on: February 08, 2009, 03:09:34 PM »
Hi all,

I have posted this in the Mp3 player section but no one has looked at it so i thought i would post it in here.

I have just been given a faulty ipod touch and i was wondering if anyone could help me fix it.
The problem with it is that the connector dock has been damaged so it will neither charge nor sync but it powers up and works perfectly (as the battery still have a bit of life in it left)
So please could you tell me what parts i would need and where would i get them from?

Also i was just wondering if it was possible to swap the ipod 8gb hard drive for a 16gb or 32gb one?

Thanks for your help guys,
Marcus

Flash memory can't be swappable, and if you were to fix that it seems you'd need a new mainboard. You can desolder/solder on a new connector, but it sounds like the traces on the motherboard are screwy, or the connector is damaged(which you can just buy an ipod connector from an online shop [sparkfun has them] and desolder the old one and replace it).

Also, have some patience dude. You posted this FIVE HOURS after the other one.
Only make ONE thread. Have some patience, it was only a few hours. You're not exactly allowed to make more than 1 thread pertaining to the same thing, either.

yeh you will need to desolder the connector and fix any broken traces.

and kicks you can replace flash memory its just really difficult to do so as the chips are tiny with loads of little connectors and the risk of breaking is very high thats why virtually no one does it. i did see it on hackaday for the old flash based nanos he said he would do it for you for like $250 if you couldn't do it yourself

i am not responsible for what i do or my advice

Yeah but it's extremely hard, that's why I pretty much said no. I'm not sure how the inside of the iTouch is set up, memory wise.

Hi there,
Thanks for your help guys.

I have opened the touch up and it does work due to a bit of life in the battery but doesnt charge so should i change the dock connector then?
Also have you got any tips on how to do this easily?

Thanks
Marcus

...read what we posted. Replace the connector and try to fix any broken traces.
You have to desolder the connector and solder a new one on.

if the pins are very small and you are not expierenced in soldering I would suggest not trying it but maybe looking for a modder for hire or somthing

Thanks for your help.
Having looked at the traces on the touch it seems that the connector is not the problem.
I have noticed on the other side of the connector where the resistors are, there is a few missing.
here are a few pictures of what i mean, i have marked one in red to show where i think the resistors should be

So could i possibly bridge these connections or should i find some suitable resistors?
Thanks
Marcus
