I just bought a dell xps 420 and I have seen some videos of people playing their ps3 on it. I was wondering how to hook my ps3 to my computer so that I can use it for a computer still as well as a tv for my games. If anyone can help please do ASAP. Thanks.

they're most likely not playing the game through their computer, but just on the monitor using a HDMI to DVI cable, or a VGA cable, if they are hooking it up though the computer, they have an capture card or a TV tuner attached to the PC

ps3 can if you have the cable

i have a cable and i've done it, plus its in the video options

Yeah my ps3 is hooked to my tv through s-video as well but my question is can you hook it to the s video on the back of the pc and play it on the screen or will it only work if you buy the vga or dvi adapter and hook it straight to your monitor?

I meant directly on the monitor not the VGA on the pc. I'm not that dumb. The only problem with using the VGA on the monitor is I won't have sound.

as far as i know you need certain adapters for VGA

i tried this same thing with my ps3, but using HDMI-DVI

i would have worked it sony weren't a bunch fat overpaid whiney babies and didn't have f**king HDCP (which i will reiterate, is f**king rediculous, i'm not shelling out another 300 for a monitor when i have one that works; thanks for the ripoff)

so if you have HDMI to DVI, and a DVI HDCP monitor then you can do it

well if you are willing to through like $75 at it you can get a hdcp ripper. I am not sure what it was called hold on while I google it...
well never mind then... It was called hdfury but they really jacked the price up on it. It would be cheaper to buy a new monitor

ok, in the short version

yes you could hook it up to your monitor.
but game systems are meant to be hooked up to TV's not monitors

long version
-you could use a video capture card/tv tuner. that would get you video and sound out of your computer.
-you could hook it up to only your monitor using a s-video, vga, dvi, or hdmi this may require a converter. (you can pick them up at a computer store) this will however leave you with out sound. (may be able to handle this with an adapter)

well in the end for my system i use DVI-HDMI on my 56 inch TV...but then use composite cables to the massive sound system for sweet bass...i couldnt use component for image because it was too short to reach to both the tv and audio box, etc.

as for the converter box, those are rediculously overpriced, and in the end after all my expenses are added up, it would be easier to get a new monitor from that wholesale club i belong to.

Well they were when I checked the time before last but that was probably 6 months ago. I have since invested in a fhd2400. The only gateway product I have ever liked.

PS3 to DVI Monitor (Via HDMI)
-HDMI - DVI cable.
-Standard AV cable (for L and R audio).

HDMI goes in to console. DVI goes into monitor.
AV cable into console (The same one you get have got with the PS3, or PS2) . L and R audio goes into the speakers.

Then you go into Graphic options. Video output, HDMI.
Sound options. Audio out - AV.

Working.

PS3 - VGA Monitor.
Get a VGA cable. Plug both ends in. Set Resolution and done. It will come with L and R audio. Which will plug into the speakers still.

we kinda went over that, exept for the sound i think,

it works great, agian, if you have an HDCP monitor

I got 2, by pure fluke. a 17" square Samsung monitor (I'll look up the jumble of letters that define which one later) we had for like 5-6 years now.
My 19" Dell Widescreen (made June 2008) which came free with my moms computer, work gave her. I saw it and yoinked it.
My Dell monitor does full 1080p. Not sure about my Samsung. They both do 1080i. Hell, I got a tube monitor that does 1080i.

I got no problems with DHCP. So I kinda forget about it.

they make HD Fury for non-HDCP monitors which in an HDCP encoder that will allow you to use an HDMI cble, plugged into HD Fury then into the monitor and it will display, but last time i check they were $85 or you can buy an x2vga
