Speaker Mod?
« on: February 11, 2009, 01:45:54 PM »
I like playing movies on my psp but the speakers are not very loud.  Im going to be removing the UMD drive in a couple of days(when I get new memory card and faceplate), and I found a pair of 5 mm thick speakers that I am thinking could be added and kept in the UMD drive.  The problem is I have no idea how much wattage etc. that the psp can hold.  The speakers I found are 4 watts 16 ohms each, but I found a different pair that are 0.25 watts each.  Also where do I connect the speaker wire to?  Im not good at hardware mods Im fairly new at them I can only do soft mods.

Ive looked all over the internet and I cant find anyone who has done it before except for the camera and speakers thing but I cant find much info.
Thanks

You solder the Speaker to the PSP Speakers like this-

I think id go with the .25watt speaker..

PS, I forget how to resize images will someone PM me on how too?

i thin the psp can hold 1w of speaker power but not sure.. i would use maybe 2 of the other speakers you have and then you jsu t wire the + - of the speaker to the + - of the psp speaker or just an amp.. cant think whats its called

hope this helped you in some way :)

So I can just wire the new speakers to existing speakers in one big series?
And would 0.25 watts even make much of a difference?

yeah it might make a different but since its only 0.25 watts you could use more than 1 :)

If you're wiring more than one new speaker, you'd probably want them in parallel.

and im ordering 2 speakers but ill stick in as many fit in the UMD bay (2-4?)
and I dont need an amplifier or resistors or anything right?

doing this requires you to hook them up to the original psp speakers....

Edit: no you would want them wired parallel.

My requirement:
Don't get too caught up in the mod. You will only need one extra speaker.
I prefer you buying a singing birthday card and getting the speaker out of that.
Solder + and - leads from the pads on the mobo or the speakers themselves for power.
The speakers from those cards are really good. 8ohm   .5watt

Good Luck,
RoBo

ok thanks
Ill get one of those then
and all I have to do is solder a wire to each piece of the other speakers in there?
seems to easy, but Im sure it wont be im not a great solderer by any means
and are the internal speakers located at the top of the LCD where the two holes are in the slim?

Yes.

Blue wire is positive and white is the negative for the speaker. I recommend the use of the left speaker (as shown)

ok
if I buy a replacement set of speakers (would psp 1000/fat ones work?  I found some but Im sure I could find some for slim), could I just either plug them in or if there is no extra plugs then strip the wires and solder them to the originals like you said?

The wires arent long enough for fat speakers. They pretty much suck if you need them for extra sound. The best way to go IMO, is a larger speaker like what is in a singing b-day card. Trust me

LoL, yea he's right

You can get one from local electronics, don't go beyond 2 watts, you will blow the fuse.

Mylar family speakers would be good enough.

Wire + - normally & you should hear sound comes out.   :yess:

NO. You just need one speaker. Plenty big, plenty loud
Here is mine:

What I did:
Removed original ring
Cut a hole w/ a dremel that took up space to about half of the ring.
Stuck new ring on.
Placed speaker directly in the middle.
Hot glued it in place.
Took some speaker mesh and cut it to the right size.
The speaker holds the mesh in place from the magnetic field
(You don't need mesh if you dont want it) Got it from a small pocket radio thing.

Another picture:

Yes, I have a silver backplate. It's mismatched

oh ok
i was planning on putting the speakers inside the UMD bay then just drilling some holes in the door
it just seems like 0.5 watts wont make much of a difference though, but I geuss a little is better than nothing.
oh and if I cant get a birthday card like that would these speakers work too?

load might be too much, and they're sort of small. Try these:

ok Im not trying to be difficult but what is the difference, they both have the same watts and ohms
I would just rather buy from ebay for now, im sorta new to shopping online :P
and do I have to loop the speakers back to the original connection like in a circuit after its connected to the internal ones?
sorry i know im asking a lot of questions I just want to be sure before I do it ive never done a hardware mod before and there is no tut for this

PS I know I dont know much about electricity but give me a break im only in grade 9

8 ohm difference... I dunno if the psp can handle 16 ohm so I'd go with 8. Uh I don't quite get your speaker question. You mean do you have to connect the new speaker, to the internal speakers, and then the original connection? Nope.

Finally, don't use age as an excuse. I'm in grade 8, and I'm only 13... Age doesn't mean anything. There are 20 y/o+ that come here and ask for help, and there are lots of 13 year olds around here that could easily answer those questions.

Good luck  :#1:

I think Ill add some more sound to my psp, I can just use that thing you can download to make it louder, but the sound might be all screwy,
I dont want a huge speaker to cover my UMD door, I want a small but loud one, any one know where I can find a list of speakers I can buy for the PSP?

LightMP3 is awesome for music after you do the speaker mod. I recommend this speaker for doing the speaker mod. http://mouser.com/Search/ProductDetail.aspx?qs=sGAEpiMZZMuNFJjvCI6tQh8mjnT0e2E1Hf0EyM8a18I%3d

Ok
@justin: I was just joking, its not an excuse i was just saying that so people wouldnt awnser with some complicated electronic stuff I wouldnt understand
im new at this, so thats my excuse :P  btw im 13 too, just in grade 9 not 8
oh yea I didnt realize the ohms difference thanks, and yes that is what I was asking, and I can just let it be I dont need to wire it back then?
@psp:  ya I have that thing bookmarked, I was planning on installing it afterwards, I just didnt wanna do it before in case I blew the speakers.   And that speaker is the same one someone else suggested too, so Ill probably buy that one then.  Should I get one or two?

Nope you wouldn't need to wire it back. Because when you connect the positive and negatve to the speaker, the speaker will be connected to those points anyway. As for the amount of speakers to get, shipping is 5 bucks and the speaker is only like 1.50 or so, so really if you plan on doing this more, or you think you might somehow destroy the speaker while trying to solder to it (unlikely?) then you might wanna buy a few more. Some extras never hurt either, so yeah I'd recommend maybe buying 3. You definitely wouldn't wanna buy one for 1.50 and pay 5 bucks shipping, and then a month later decide you wanna try it on another psp and spend ANOTHER 5 bucks on shipping.

Well when I do it it says 5.64 for 3 plus shipping charge 20.00$ maybe because I live in Canada (Right beside Toronto).  And I meant how many should I connect together inside my psp though?  Can it even nhandle more than one, or is the 8 ohms max thing per speaker?

No clue about the amount you could shove in there. But it says 20, but you can change it to 8 if you live in Canada. I live i Canada too :) It says 20, but that's the most expensive method of shipping. When you actually go to check out and stuff, you can change it.

I ordered 5 my first time trying those speakers. I put one in mine. Then I sold the rest for $10 each installed. I'm ordering 10 more and already got friends that want one.

Ok I FINALLY got all the parts I needed in the mial, and I soldered the wires to the right spots and everything, but now I cant run them out the back into the UMD chamber because the psp wont close (the faceplate wont screw in) because its to tight with the solder and the wires in it.  Does anyone have a solution for this?

EDIT***

I got it to fit, and when I held the wires to the speaker the sound played through it, but then I soldered them on and no soound will play at all, not even through the internal speakers anymore.  I desoldered it but it still happens, and hooking up a different speaker doesnt help either.  Any suggestions?

You've probably blown the sound fuse.

Theres a pic of where it is one here, all you have to do is plop a drop of solder over it.
