Yeah, that board was small as hell, and I dont have a fine point soldering iron, and my hands are not as steady as they used to be, so it was pretty hard to get that stuff done.  I am actually getty pretty good at surface mount soldering with a standard iron.  Now all I have left to do is mount the fan, run the wires, and mount the switch, and its done.  I could actually use 1 more UMD door (black, no damage, both hinges must work) for the final thing.  Both of my doors, have one hinge thats broke.  Would anyone like to make a donation?

I happened to come across an old MS Duo, and it had a write protect switch on it.  So I broke it open and removed all the surface mounted components from it, except the switch.  Then I soldered wires to the scrated off traces on the other side so that the switch would work properly.

I dont pick out parts purpously, they just kinda "happen".  Reason for this switch and mounting type was because the height of the switch, from board to top, was the same thickness as the UMD doors plastic.  So I just out a box the size and shape of the switch, and let the board flat against the back (inside) of the UMD door.  When mounted like this, the switch sits below the surface of the UMD door, by the the thickness of the board, so no accedential switching when I put it down or it slides across my seat or bed.  This power switch reconstruction alone, took me almost 4 hours.

I am kind of a perfectionist, when it comes to this stuff.   I do my best to make it the final product, the first time.  Since this photo, I have flattened out the parts and extra solder left from the components with a Dremel.  Everything still works, and fits VERY nicely behind the UMD door.  And the great thing, is that there is still room for more mods, even with the fan and power switch in place!

Yes.   I only have ONE UMD door left, and its the one on my fully funcitonal unit.  I was hoping I would not have to cut that one up, but guess I can.  lol  I will get it finished either tonight, or tomorrow, and take a short video, and some more pics of the final assembly.

Yeah, I know thats pretty bad.  I found one online for $3, and my PayPal account STILL has $0 in it and that $40 has STILL not been transferred!  I will eventually.  lol  If I use the one UMD that I have on my functional unit, it HAS to be right the FIRST time, so it will last until I get a second backup UMD door.

Great news for those of you who are keeping up-to-date on this project of mine!  I have gotten everything layed out, and I am about to do the final install this morning!  Getting my soldering tools together right now, and should have it done in about 2 hours.  I had a few more modifications to make it fit correctly, but it was well worth it.  I also decided NOT to buy a new UMD door as of yet.  The broken one I am using for testing, actually closes really tight, and does not come off when you open it.  So until I order a new UMD door, this one will work just fine.  Therefore the fan will not be mounted permenantly, as it will go into the new UMD door once I get it offline.  Stand by, you will see some pretty cool stuff

Nice mod bro i seen someone do this but you found a better fan for it. I know a better one that may give better flow then that trying looking into graphics cards for PCs. Some have nice fans that are small enough and do pretty well with air flow.
Thats true i seen some.

Actually, if I could get a SMALLER fan, that would be awsome.  Still needs to be low profile, but it does not need to be that big.  I just worked in what I had on me.  If the new fan were about HALF that size, I would much rather use that one.

Also, per another users suggestion, I am going to put BLUE LEDs in the fan caseing!

I really don't see what the point of this mod is, sure it will be cool when it's done but pretty pointless if you ask me. The PSP has no heat issues.

Well, it is basically completed the way it is.  I am STILL waiting on my new UMD door, so I can get a final (solidly mounted fan and switch) product together, but the look will most likly remain the same.  Thoughts I DID have were, LEDs in the fan case, paint the fan case black to match the door (more stealthy), add a status light (on/off) somewhere on the front of the unit.

For you, that could be true, and it depends on a number of things like room temperature, CPU speed, how you hold the unit, and whether or not your using WIFI a lot.

There are more reasons than this probably, but those are the most logical ones.  For me, heat is mostly due to WIFI use, and the fact that I ALWAYS have my CPU set to 333 mHz.

Well, for those of you who are interested in it, I will probably be selling this mod out of my PSP.  It will include the back case, UMD door/fan/switch, and wires.  All you would need to do is wire to the 5 volt power source under the right speaker connector.  For those interested, PM me with offers.  No trades right now, unless its a trade WITH some money as well.  (I need to make money where I can right now)

there are probably several different ways to complete it, but as for me, it works just fine the way it is.  I dont even have to do more work to it.  I intentionally dont have it mounted permenantly, so that if the person that buys it, wants to mod it some more, or play around with it, they can still do it easily, but the mods DOES still work.  I use it from time to time.  If someone wants it and finds a way they like it and wants to mount it permenantly, go for it.  I would love to see the new way of doing it.
