SRLEDS on laptop?
« on: February 25, 2009, 10:03:12 AM »
Hey there.
I'm working on this science project that we have to do at school with my friend, and we're doing life on other planets. So, I thought, just to get some extra marks, I'd get a model of an alien and stick some yellow 0603 SMDs into the eyes, all connected to a USB cable. But I was just wondering, would there be any way of making the LEDs sound-reactive to the laptop's audio without having to use external speakers (no mains point).

Thanks in advance.

You could have them get their power and audio inputs from the headphone jack on the laptop. I recommend USB for power and the headphone jack for the audio inputs for the leds.

Yes, just what I was thinking. Would a 2n2222 transistor do it?
Also, if something was plugged into the headphone jack, would the audio still work on the laptop?

It's a basic headphone jack...if you plug something into them, the speakers won't work.

It's either the speakers or headphone jack, that's how they work...

Yes, most people do know that, including me :). I was just wondering if there was a way to bypass that without :censored:ing up my friend's laptop. I might try using battery powered ones, since I don't have access to mains.
