Where do I start as a new modder?
« on: November 27, 2008, 11:23:49 PM »
Im not a dumbass or anything that wouldn't understand modding of MB's n such, just wondering where you think I should be starting. Where should I start and what should I do as my first form of practice, with that said also what do I move onto, should I learn about LEDs? Mother boards? soldering? what?

Thank-you ahead of time.

No I was thinking more along the lines of a 360, considering I don't even have a PSP. But yeah I didn't exactly mean the physical things I should start doing, what should I learn before I do anything? Like what skills n such

I would first learn how to solder. Most of the mods require this ability. It's not that hard. I just recently learnt. Secondly, I would learn the basic knowledge on electricity and circuits. With these two abilities you could complete a fairly easy mod. I started with the LED mod for the GBC. This is probably the easiest mod there is and it’s a great mod for your first one.

I seriously do not recommend starting on a 360,try starting on the controller instead
but if you insist:
1st you're gunna have to learn how to solder, solder reeeaaalllll good and strong.
Then research basic electronics (resistance, ohms law,etc.).
Find the power points on the 360 by either using a tut on acidmods or a multimeter.
Solder in LED's using proper resistors
VOILA!!!
Derp.

First i would learn on how to solder, then learn about resistors, leds, and the 360 controller mobo. Then you could do your very first led controller mod

I find that to start, you should definitely have all required tools. Although this isn't really a skill, it is VERY useful. From experience, I have found it extemely frustrating starting a mod, and then having to stop for weeks while waiting for a certain part. I have also found easy mods made difficult due to lack of tools. An LED mod for example: If you are using really thick solder, or lack flux, it will be a pain in the rear to complete. Tools/parts required will vary depending on mods, but don't start anything until you have everything.

As for skills, as everyone has said, learn soldering, and practice. Don't learn to solder on your 360. Do it on an old stick of ram, computer board, etc. When you feel comfortable, THEN move onto your 360. You should also learn basic electronics as others have said - getting help will be much easier and it'll help you in the long run. Learning to use a multimeter is also useful. Just do simple stuff at first, and then move onto harder things.

Learn to solder is important.

Then stuff like Ohm's Law, circuits, potential difference (voltage), current, power, impedance are handy. Most of the stuff is documented so you don't need much knowledge to do them.

i just saw this topic one way that a friend of mine suggest i learn to solder is to get some single core wire so that it can be bent into shapes and cut it up into pieces then practice soldering by trying to build stuff with those pieces like a house frame or a pyramid or something. i never tried it and i cant solder but thats what he suggested to me

i am not responsible for what i do or my advice

Heres my suggestion. Take it or leave it for what its worth. Find you an old vcr or tv or radio or whatever and take it apart! Now start with your soldering iron or desolderer taking everything off the circuit boards. Ok you got everything off start putting it all back together.Soldering all the lil fun stuff back on the boards. You can put it back together to where it works again or just put it together just to help you improve your soldering skills. Thats where I would start and take your time.Try to get as good as you can because controllers are atleast 4 times smaller than whats in the radio or tv. So Good luck learning to solder its not that hard just timely. Then study all the things you can do as far as modding then from there hands on time to rock and roll!!!!  GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

TV's are one of the most unsafe thing to take apart ever... Those caps can electrify and kill you in a second lol, like bustin said...

heres what i recommend
15 watt or/ adjustable 30 watt soldering iron.
wire 30 awg for the controller and  22-27 awg wire for the inside of the 360
rosin core solder.
flux paste
de-soldering braid
wire cutters 30 awg and up
electrical tape / shrink wrap
liquid electrical tape
crazy glue(ftw)
0603 leds and if you want 1mm 3mm and 5mm leds
pliares(needle nose)
a security torx bit 8 and like a 9
and a excto
and just in case id get a set of small screw drivers. (i do psp's so i need #0 bits ) small screw drivers are useful random bs things

wait on resisters untill you know what mod ur doing
