What is the difference in the finished product?  What are the pros and cons to each.

direct contact are more reactive but u can't use wifi or hold switch. you must add external. lm386, are less reactive but u can use wifi or hold switch.

Yeah like justin said, the direct are more reactive but you can't use wifi or hold. So it's pretty much just personal preference, I personally prefer LED activeness over over using hold or wifi, I found a nice switch that you can use for a good price.
