How to merge these 2 pieces of metal?? PLEASE HELP
« on: April 05, 2009, 03:54:59 PM »
Like in my other thread I want to ad a speaker to my nano, but I have tried hot gluing and super gluing as a last resort to get these 2 metal pieces to connect, the ring  is aluminum so obviously solder doesn't stick to it and the iron isn't hot enough to melt the ends to stick together, I have no idea what the screen is made of. But I cut a long strip of aluminum then twisted it into a circle I want to connect the ends so the loop doesn't come undone and then get the screen to stick on top of that cause my ipod would be tossed around in my pocket etc. so the small magnetic field on the speaker wouldn't be enough hold it there without coming off. Please guys how can I sew up these ends of metal to stick??

Do you have a link to what your talking about? to like Walmart or something, there are lots of different types of epoxy's.

Here is my plan since there's very little room inside the nano, now I COULD fit a earbuds speaker in it but thats not loud enough.

Welding is the best thing for that.

you cant weld this, unless you have an aluminum welder or someone that can weld alluminum and even if so it would be damn expensive. plus the metal is too thin and will just melt when trying to weld it.  :taunt:

Yeah seriously.

I think some sort of epoxy/glue is my best bet the only thing is what kind that is cheap. I only have like $2 =P

I like that speaker size. Where did you get that, or was it just out of an earbud?

Nahh Cellphone, it's almost exactly the same size as the PPS speakers.

And ik it looks a bit fat on the back but just the speaker when it's done will be only about 3-5mm high

Like should that gorilla glue stuff work on this?

I know I just spillt dollar tree brand superglue on my hand lol oopsee XD

I will probably pick up a box of rubber gloves too. Lol it scares me might just get a qtip and swab that around on it to be safe one guy lost a finger with that stuff he glued it to something and they couldn't get it off without taking off so much skin that there would be no point to his finger other then to remove it. Like I said that glue scares me... alot lol

yup, jb weld or 2-ton epoxy will work. 5 minute epoxy would also do it.  Artic silver makes thermal epoxy which will look silvery, which might give you the welded effect.  You could also mix thermal paste into epoxy to give you that effect as well.

Welding aluminum is very difficult, espeacially something as small as that. I believe you would need a TIG welder to do it, and even the best alluminum welders would have touble not destroying those parts.

The only other way I can think of would to take that mesh material and press the shape into it using some sort if die process. use like a piece of wood for the mold and a metal slug of some sort as the press.

gorilla glue is not as strong as people make it out to be. it would take me about 10 mins to TIG weld this in my shop. welding aluminum is not that bad, it just requires the correct tools. you can use a tig machine (recomended) or a mig machine with aluminum wire. obviously this may be out of the question for someone without access to a shop.

the best adhesive I can recomend is JB weld. you can get JB quick. (dries fast) we use this stuff to patch gass tanks!!! it will hold anything

I guess probably it wouldnt be that hard to just tack a couple spots with the right equipment. I just shudder when people suggest alluminum welding as I had zero success with it when I tried it at a welding clinic when in college.  I seem to remember vaporizing whatever I was trying to weld, but I guess that isnt saying much considering I dont weld steel very well either

JB weld is a must have in the shop, we use it for the toughest jobs as well and havent had any problems with it.

gorilla glue = garbage. consumer grade garbage, there have been tons of better glues available for many years. not sure how gorrila glue became so popular, must be a brandname thing.

Idk I guess it's just the fact that it's widely available as a "super strong glue"... Personally I use krazy glue, and many people i know use super glue.

JB Weld is the best for this kinda stuff. It's what I use when I'm:
     a. too lazy to wait for my soldering iron to heat
     b. can't solder it for some reason

Thanks to HiddenVenom for the sig!

God dammit get over it... You didn't friggin ruin the thing, IT'S REMOVABLE! You can replace a headphone jack for like 10 bucks... People always break stuff modding, especially on their first try or on something never done before... It's something you'll have to get used to.

No, but 1st gen nano still = win. Not much room, but SO much easier to mess with.
