lol that reminds me of when my neighbor called me round to check his computer because he said it was running slow. i when round and first thing i did was pop in a bootable virus scanner all up to date and like that set it going and let it do a full deep scan it found a massive 2500 viruses, spyware and mallware in the end i decided it was better for me to just format and resetup his computer with the protection turned on this time

god knows how many my dads lappy has... its only a month old, and runs slow as all hell. I put Avast on there but i havent scaned it in a while

I do weekly scans ^.^ But it's a shared computer and I'm not sure how smart my brother is when it comes to avoiding viruses... Atleast it hasn't slowed down yet. 2500 is A LOT of viruses though. You have to click every fake ad you see to get that many  O_o

I have a two part anti-virus:

1) AVG
2) Common sense

I haven`t had to re-install my OEM install of Vista from two years ago, and I scan maybe once a month.

Never had any issues with viruses.

Pretty sad how some people are just THAT blunt when it comes to tech.

i have vista and no antivirus.... yes i am stupid but i just keep it all updated and all secured up and keep UAC on.... and i get no viruses at all(i scan it like once a month with bootable anti viruses)...

people just lack some common sense... first they visit untrusted sites click the ads on the sides pop-ups etc and end up with a million viruses...

I use Norton and theres nothing wrong with it.. Its actually really good. And i also reformat about once every 2 weeks...

Well the personal data could be stored on a separate HD.

But I choose to use common sense, keep my HD defragmented, remove bloatware, have only the things I need running running.

Less hassle later on.

Reformatting constantly can ruin the boot sector of your HD, so do be careful.

I've tried Kaspersky, NOD32, Norton, and other miscellaneous antiviruses. Nothing wants to work properly on my laptop, so I'm always without an antvirus.

well not exactly an apple computer. apple is using standard desktop hardware but is charging double the money. If they stopped being :censored:s and allowed everyone to install their os i'm sure they would have greater market penetration...

i do admit that it is based on needs but for 90% of computer users a mac would be fine if not better than windows

- adium - twitter, msn, aol, google talk, ichat etc etc messenger client
- mail - email client
- adress book and ical - callender contacts etc etc
- yummy ftp & cute ftp - both excellent ftp clients
- spotify - music streaming

well that proves my point , mac may be a great os but Apple Computers are way too overpriced for standard desktop hardware. If they allow mac os to run on any hardware , they'll have a huge marketshare. I know that hardware combinations can be a pain to deal with but how long can Apple run away from this minor inconvenience. If the Hackintosh community then i'm sure Apple can perfect it...
The OS is the only way they have , to sell their overpriced hardware.

And Robin, you are now the first person I have seen to actually list reasons as to why you would use an Apple computer instead of a computer running Windows or Linux.

You are obviously more tech savvy than other people I know who use Macs.

Uh, no. If they used standard computer hardware then there wouldn't be Mac-Specific ram/gpus/etc. and you'd be able to install OS X on any computer without running into problems.

[/Flame] umm this is a thread about viruses, Apple fanboys: take your Macs and go edit some video or something Im sorry guys, but 20yrs of being second place doesnt lie.  I will take my viruses and like it, then to struggle with a mac, who's users btw ultimately end up running a window OS in some shape or form in order to keep their machines useful.
