Custom PSP help
« on: September 30, 2009, 05:14:57 AM »
I desided to gut my PSP and put it in a custom box. I'm planning on removing the UMD, replacing the ^[]OX buttons with a second nub (Full sized, not razor), replacing the D-Pad with a small 4-way joystick, replacing the R/L with 2 smaller buttons, and making the overall shape of the PSP like a square the length of the screen. I need to know what other things I don't need, what I can do to make things smaller, etc. I'm planning of running all games off the memstick and I would like to be able to get small, permenant battery that can possibly last longer than the current one. Thanks.

Still working on the design. I'm wanting the length and width to be about as long as the width of the LCD.

I drew a full size diagram yesterday and I'm plainning on creating a cardboard prototype. What should I use to make the actual case when the time comes?

Were you actually planning on keeping it a square or was that just a rough idea? You could mold it into a more ergonomic grip.

also i would just like to add nw that the psp was designed with the buttons on either side of the screen for the pure fact tht having the screen above the buttons means that you only hold the bottom of the console meaning you have to support the top part of the console tiring out your hands more, the ds is different because it is flip screen and all of the weight is in the bottom half mainly.

It's the rough idea. I was originally planning a T-Shaped case, but decided the square would be easier to get up and running. Also, I'm debating the square idea because of what FaT3oYCG said and realizing it is true. If anyone else wants to suggest a shape, feel free. I'd like if it didn't look like the PSP does already, I'm going for something unique.

I have everything together and working, but the case is what I really need right now so that I can fit it all together.

if i was going to design a console then i would have to say i would base it off of an xbox 360 controller, you could use an existing 360 controller and make it larger with fiber glass and simply put the screen in it, as fiber glass can be used to make anything with the correct moulds you could also make it slide screen or flip screen etc this way you would be able to wire up 2 analog sticks all of the buttons make a PSX l2 and r2 button mod and have triggers instead of the L and R buttons on the psp.

All this talk is making me become more interested in doing this myself.

I was debating the 360 controller myself, but I wasn't sure if it was going to fit. First I'd need a 360 controller though. Any other thoughts on something I could do?
