Dual Channel Ram
« on: January 14, 2010, 05:03:52 PM »
I Purchased another stick of ram off of newegg (ddr2 gskill) and I added it to my pc making 3 gigs total. I have a total of 4 slots and Im thinking that im going to buy another stick to get dual channel because 3 sticks takes my system back to single channel. Anyway my question is Single channel 3gig ddr2 faster then dual channel 2gig ddr2? I noticed my pc acting a lil odd when I added the stick. But wondering if I should take it out until I get another stick.

Thanks

Basically when you add RAM to your system, you're increasing the amount of memory your programs can use. If your memory is dual channeled then that increases how fast you can access that memory.

The performance gains in single channel vs. dual channel are debatable, but I think it's safe to say that in your system, faster access to memory is more important than more memory. So adding a stick of 1GB RAM (for a total of 4GB) should give you the same access speed with increased memory.
