ABXY Lightning - Help needed
« on: November 22, 2009, 02:29:00 AM »
Hi all, I want to mod my ABXY buttons with some LEDs.

I read the tutorial on llamma.com, but I still have several questions.

- What color should I use? 4 White LEDs or Red, Blue, Green and Yellow?
- What is better? SMDs or 3mm LEDs? Which ones are easier to install?
- The glue. I'd like to know if there's a way to do the mod without glueing the keys. That thing scaries me.
- Cutting buttons: is this needed? I'm afraid to break my buttons
- I want to do this on a Matrix controller, but I don't know what power points should I use (I want the mod turns off when I turn the controller off)

Last but not least.. I saw a website a couple of months ago that was selling spare parts for 360 controller, especially ABXY buttons. I think it was from the UK but I might be wrong. Does anybody know its name? I can't find it anywere.

Thank you.

hi mate

my advice to you is use the search feature on the forum....

this subject has been covered on here many times.....

https://www.acidmods.com/forum/index.php?action=search

but here's my tips.....

dont use a matrix pad as they only have a 2v switched supply..... that is easilly usable.

use 4 white leds be it 5mm 3mm or 0603

yes you have to glue the leds into the buttons...

and yes there is some cutting/drilling of the buttons to fit the leds in but it depends on what leds your using........

Use hotglue only! With hot glue.. if you make a mistake once its dried its easy enough to pull the glue off leaving no trace.

As spurgurgle stated, Matrix has a 2v switched powersupply, It should work fine, but your led's wont be as bright without using external hardware.

Also if you have a programmer check out my code here: https://www.acidmods.com/forum/index.php?topic=33501.0

I also have a CG controller but there's already a 12F683 (rapidfire) and if i do t0pP8uZz's mod i wouldn't know where to put the chip.

In one of my controllers i have 3 x 12f683's

Theres tons of room, One large area is below the ABXY buttons, And the other is Below the right analog stick. Just take the front case of, and look at the back of it.. theres 2 big areas.

space in a 360 controller is rarely a issue

I decided to do the guide button mod first. It look easier to me and I already have all the parts.

The only question is... How can I cut the button to make it like this?

I have no dremel and it seems that if I break it with pliers or something like that, the "plus" and the center doesn't remain.

Thanks.

when i light up my dome/guide buttons. i just use a drill to drill out most of the inside of the button then cram as many of your chosen type on leds inthere with a bit of hot glue..... and also cut a small notch to take the wire....

i am in the process of making a full tut on button lighting and using topP8uzz's flasher code..

it should be up by the end of the week.
(lots of pic's need watermarking and uploading lol )

so you may want to wait for this.......

it will include guide button lightimg
ABXY lighting
maybe start and back lighting
trigger back lighting....
and of course a full install guide for topps flasher code..........

i might evan put a simple bit on ROL changing so its all in 1 nice tut

Will surely wait for your tutorial, thank you.

In the meanwhile I buy a USB PIC programmer on ebay, I saw this which is cheap. http://cgi.ebay.it/iCA01-A-USB-Microchip-PIC-Programmer-ICSP-Adapter_W0QQitemZ270471592289QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3ef95cf961

I don't have any serial ports on my pc..

but my pic programmer is only a cheap ebay jobby and is doing the job just fine......

and ill post a link in this thread to my lighting guide when its finished to make it easier for you to find ok....

I put 2 red 3mm leds into the dome (without drilling the button) and connected them to the rumble motors it came out so well! I'm really happy!

ahah i burnt myself 2 fingers, the soldering iron was falling down so i caught it with my left hand without thinking about what i was doing.

But the mod is worth the hurt

yes my idea is to do your abxy flasher install which is very nice, but idk if i have enough skill and i'm waiting for the programmer to arrive.

spurgurgle i'll wait for your tutorial before doing anything else because i don't want to break my controller/buttons. thank you.

maybe today i'll add a second led to the dome, connected to the other rumble, because now the lightning is only in the upper right part of the dome, and it's quite noticeable.

EDIT: i use awg 30 wire for my mods, but the wire sucks, it often breaks. The solder joint is still there, but the "inside" of the wire breaks. Any tips?

ive never had any problem with the 30 awg wire. Only times that i noticed somthing with the wire such as breakage was with myself and trimming the wire down  for a good connection. Your problem  is most likely  your trimming, or you are bending the wire when ur trimming it. A friend here told me a good technique, use a steak knife and  apply little pressure to the wire itself slowly pull the wire away from the knife this will leave clean trim on wire.

cheers mate...

yeah when i thought of using a bit of breadboard it made led mods alot easier as i no longer need to run like 8,10,12,14, how ever many wires to the power point in the center of the pad (like in lamma's guide)
it saves alot of space meaning you can fit evan more in there.....

After some time...

My 2nd degree burns on my hand healed perfectly and i was able to use the soldering iron again.. Today i got my usb pic programmer and tried t0pbuzz's fader code. That's so nice!

Then i swapped the ROL into my 360 controller. blue red red blue, it came out pretty well. It's the hardest mod i've ever done, it took me 30 mins, those 0603s are so small and is difficult to solder on them. But i'm so happy! pics incoming.

In the meanwhile one of the two red leds i put in the dome stopped working, maybe because i haven't put any resistor.

when you start out  smd's are a pain, but you will  get use to them. I would practice on some old things  with smds, phones controllers, you get the point. I got good with them and i finally am able to do  them in a matter of minutes.
Now to the Leds, when your using two leds its best to use the exact same models, if you have them mixed up with diffrent leds, one can use a diffrent amount of volts. any way back to my point  usually red leds that i use run at 1.5 volts. so with out any resitors on the controller the led will recive to much power and burn out

If you are having trouble soldering 0603 leds to wire, I made this tutorial a while back.

just how I do it.

One of my red led of the rol burnt yesterday... I don't know why... Maybe because it was connected to the rapidfire (10K resistor, right?) Or because there are 2 blue leds in the dome and 2 red?
