Usb cable/Rs232 cable needed?

I have the maximus 360 xtractor pro, and vampire kit. So my only question is (after extensively reading many tutorials, for various drives) are either of those cables NEEDED? If so, for what drives? Because it seems all the new ones, lite-on, and the older ones only need sata to connect to computer.
