Are my LEDs gone for good
« on: March 27, 2010, 11:18:58 AM »
Hello everyone,
I have tonnes of experience soldering so when I saw the Xbox 360 LEDs on eBay, I thought it seemed a nice easy job.

The result however was entirely different. I've never soldered something so small, I took the LEDs off fine, that was just a case of flooding them with solder. I put LED 3 in first, bottom left. Then LED 4, bottom right. Both no problem. I then tried LED1, the solder came off completely and I'm left with the top section with a blob of solder and the other part without, it seems quite a fiddly job so I'm just wondering whether its still going to work before I carry on. Many thanks, Nathan.

I got a close up to demonstrate the problem. It's a bit sloppy with the other LEDs but the main thing is they work.

EDIT: You may also notice there is a white line between led 1 and 2. This came up so that could be a problem.

Thanks once again,
Nathan.

you should still be able to solder to it,and your letting the solder stay on the tip for too long, either that or your heat is up too high, that's why you have char around the outside of the solder.

That's great news, I'll get started soon. Is the White line anything to worry about?
The iron is a fixed 20w, I think the problem was with
leaving the solder on too long as suggested

thank you once again

I dont know what soldering iron your using, but the one i taught my self with was a cheap radioshack one.  Then i upgraded to a hakko station which are amazing, and well priced.  It also depends on the tip your using also, because you dont want to use a huge tip with tiny parts.  Here is a link to a hakko solder station if your interested.

And here are the tips i use, they work reallllllly good for floating off smds and soldering small parts.

WOOHHOOO!!!! Problem solved. I used wire from the LED to a small hole where the piece I pulled up led to. It works now so all is well.
