[360][Sprocketme2]Sludge
« on: March 14, 2010, 01:42:53 PM »
Alright well Ive been waiting around deciding what console I want to mod, but I have finally decided on my 360 seeing as the 3yr warranty will run out this June anyway. Ill start off with this little intro video

Acidmods Spring 2010 mod-off 3/14/10

Im still throwing around A LOT of ideas but this is my tentative list of mods for now:
Cygnos360 v2
New heatsinks
Complete faceplate redesign
Top and bottom windows (top window will include some sort of design)
Hard drive window
White accent lighting
Paint job of some sort (im thinking white as the secondary color)

I've disassembled the console but haven't done any permanent damage yet. So thats about it for now.

UPDATE
Alright I ordered a good portion of the parts and am beginning to wrap my head around running homebrew on a 360 (much more complicated than psp's  :psp: ) As far as physical work, I have disassembled the console, sketched up the sides and faceplate, and began Bondo work on the faceplate:

This should give some indication to what i have in store for the faceplate. Also I have decided on a paint scheme, window, and lighting that should all go together well.

Another update:
Acidmods Spring 2010 mod-off 3/18/10
Not too much other than metal work on the lower motherboard shell. I cut away the honeycomb shroud from behind the rear fan to increase air flow and reduce noise from the fan. Also I cut two holes, one in the top and one in the bottom for a 1.5 inch fan from an xbox 1 gpu, and another 60mm pc fan. Also I cut the metal away behind the xclamps for a window and new heatsink mounting hardware.

Last thing, i got two revision B 360 heatsinks Ill be replacing the existing heatsinks with

More pictures of my progress
I didn't do anything Friday or Saturday because I was out of town but i managed to get a little bit done today.

The first picture was actually taken the night of my last update. It is the result of carelessness while trying to remove the xclamps. Lesson learned: XCLAMPS ARE REALLY SHARP!  :x:

The next two pictures just show my 1st and 2nd draft sketches on the case and primed faceplate. I guess ill be doing final draft sketches tomorrow. After that ill be doing some drilling then the trickiest part of the bondo work is coming up. I should be cutting the windows this week. Ill be heading downtown to pick the colors for painting probably next week.

Also soldering wires for pulsevu 2x and LEDs and attaching new heatsinks to the motherboard will occur sometime before next week i just dont know when.

UPDATE
Acidmods Spring 2010 Mod-off 3/23/10
This video covers my progress since the last video. I have replaced the 1st gen. heatsinks with 2nd gen ones and replaced the XCLAMP mounting system with 8 M5 bolts and accompanying washers. Credit goes to Lawdawg0931 for xclamp replacement style. I've soldered all the wires necessary to connect the Pulsevu 2x chip up when it comes in the mail. The 40mm and 1.5" fans have been put in place after moving a few capacitors. Ive got passive RAM heatsinks on the way from ebay, and once the pulsevu chip is in place ill be doing white LEDs. Painting sometime...

Well spring break just started, and as a result I haven't exactly gotten as much done as I should have. Regardless, here is my progress to date.

  • First Image Shows my craptastic epoxy job creating a frankenduct.
  • Lower fan mounted in place with bolts. had to move 2 caps on the motherboard, which was a lot harder than i expected.
  • Back window, no plexi, no lights, and no sketching now. All my plexi is scuffed up so ill have to pick up some more.
  • Cutting new hole for ROL and power lights (the bondo is drying now)

Heatsinks should arrive tomorrow followed by my pulsevu later this week. Tomorrow will be busy, so I plan on cutting the big window Tuesday maybe. Then paint hopefully...

Im not sure who to ask for permission so ill just ask this to the general community. I would like to use the acidmods logo (either the page icon "AM" or the round forum category "AM") on the fan duct for this mod. I figure its cool, but i just want to make sure.

ive done a lot of work on this lately, but neglected to document most of my progress, i should have a big update tomorrow with lots of pictures.

This is a mod that wasn't originally planned, but ive opted to do due to overlooking the necessity for a dvd drive. Soo, I will have a modular external dvd drive. Ill be using cat5 ethernet for the power cable and sata extender for the sata (duh). The dvd drive will have a window, lighting, and a matching enclosure/paintjob. Its mostly done already because I found a nice enclosure. Pics soon.

Here is the jacks i am adding to the rear of the 360 console to attach the dvd drive

Pulse VU wired up. mostly. The LEDs are what i'm working on currently. There will be a lot. 50-75 is a lot to me at least.

Update:

Acidmods Spring 2010 Mod-off 4/20/10

Done so far:
Everything except:
Faceplate 'lectronics
external dvd casing (nearly done)
few more leds
wire up leds
assemble case
make custom patch cable for dvd
install extra switch behind faceplate

Also the fan duct had to be repainted, but it still has the acidmods logo just smaller and off to the side

no pictures on this update, simply because i have no time, and I'm very near finished. I finally closed everything up (minus the faceplate) and thankfully it turns on still  The only problems that need addressing are the dvd drive is jammed and the stock 360 fans have developed a problem. When i turn the xbox on they are quiet like normal, but within minutes the fans gradually spin up to full blast. The air coming out the back is not hot, so I dont know why the fans are going so fast. They just stay blowing at full blast. I've not found anybody else with this problem so anybody with advice please let me know whats causing this problem.

Did you hook them up differently?  Such as the 12v fan mod.  If not, i wouldn't really worry about it anyways.  I would be happy that there pushing more air lol.

Normally i wouldnt be worried about it, but it is giving the impression that either the CPU or GPU is getting hot enough to speed up the fans for some reason. I know that an air pocket in the thermal paste could cause the chip to get hot and not transfer heat, so im going to reseat the heatsinks right after i post this, see if that changes anything.

I didnt alter the voltage going to the vans at all, so it shouldnt be any different. It gradually spins up to 100% within minutes of turning the console on.

FINAL SUBMISSION

I will admit the disc drive does not function entirely. You cannot insert or remove discs because the center magnet clip is not rigid enough to detach from the drive mechanism. The electronics are fully functional though. The Pulsevu 2x is completely working (somehow haha) The touch sensor button didnt quite get finished. But that wasnt really crucial anywho. Other than that, it runs nice and cool from what i can tell. obviously havent gamed any since the mod.
Acidmods Spring 2010: final submission aye, really cruddy video

i got to say it looks pretty good

but why didnt you turn the power button? because the green paint/goo/whatever drops are falling down
while the power button is sideways

I guess i never really thought about the orientation of the power symbol till you brought it up. IDK I moved the button as a whole to center it on the faceplate and just didn't think about the direction of the symbol.
