DVD drive ROM help
« on: March 19, 2010, 04:07:58 PM »
Okay. The DVD drives store the firmware on an onboard ROM chip.

Do all of the drives use the same ROM chip? I checked out my 83850C-A0A2 and a Hitachi 79 and they both looked exactly the same except for the lettering on the ROMs (of course it won't be exact, since they're not in the same batch, etc).

Would they be interchangable? Anyone got a part number/schematic? I need pinouts damnit!

Hmmm, I assume since all DVD drive firnwares are 256 kb, they should all be interchangeable. But now that I think about it, a hitachi doesn't need to be power cycled to be flashed. A lite-on does. So it's a good chance it's a different pinout.

Huh. That may not have anything to do with the Physical ROM IC though. I guess there's only one way to find out..
