Rockstar Compiles and Releases Cracker Code

Steam Retail Version of Max Payne 2 Contains Cracked Code
by, aquatsr

Game companies are always complaining that without DRM, hackers can more easily develop cracked versions of their games and release them for free which cuts into profits for the game companies. While that is true to a certain extent, this latest development from Rockstar Games seems highly hypocritical.

Supposedly, Rockstar Games took a DRM-free, cracked version of their Max Payne 2 game and compiled that for Steam availability instead of removing the DRM from their version and recompiling that for release. Essentially "stealing" the cracked code.

In the new executable code some observant individuals found an ASCII (text) signature from the cracking team Myth, who are no longer around but remain infamous (or famous, depending on your point of view) due to their signature.

So what do you think? Is it OK for a game studio to "steal" back code that was stolen from them, and to profit from it? Or are they just as wrong as the pirates who took it in the first place? Or is one more right/wrong than the other?
