Fan mod
« on: February 11, 2011, 05:01:45 PM »
So I have been attempting this for a while now but finally got a soldering tip that could put enough heat down.

Goal was to add a fan over the extra heatsink to aid in the cooling process.  I bought a 12v fan and soldered the leads to unused 12v pads on the mobo (no wire splicing) and cut a hole in the side of the case for the air flow.

Here are my results: (pics taken on iphone, not the best quality)

^front shot, box on no problems

^side shot of fan hole/grill

^guts shot after testing

Thanks all, unfortunately I ran into a problem, After a good session of gaming (3 -4 hours) it decided to pop back up with the E74 error that I had fixed originally :censored:, I am thinking this is because the fan currently puts a little pressure on the heatsink on one side stressing the board a little.  hopefully after a little cool down session (over the weekend and maybe next week) Ill double check the clamp mod and cut away what I need to off the fan and hopefully it will start working again.  This is a fairly big disappointment but should be fixable.  If I cant shave off enought from the fan Ill just make it external, its fairly thin anyways.

On the plus side the heatsinks were cool to the touch after a goos sesh so it is still promising.
