External Harddrive Idea
« on: January 29, 2010, 12:56:05 PM »
Hello All, I have an idea. Here are my parts and my idea in a list, i will need some advice, whether it be good or bad before i start purchasing.

What i have:

3 x 500GB Sata 2.5" Drives.
 USB HUB

What i need:

3x Sata Enclosures (Same type)
Cords

Heres what i plan on doing. Remove the Chip's inside the enclosure and practically build my own enclosure to hold those 3 drives. Then take the usb cords and solder them to the chip(usb to sata) adapters to that it is internal. Then take appart the USB hub and have it mounted inside the enclosure with just mini type b female usb jack on the back of the enclosure. So that 3 HDD's go to hub, go to that one jack. What this would do is practically make 3x 500GB internal laptop drives, go to one single USB. Can i get some advice on this?

My main concern, Wouldnt the hard drives be slower since they go to the hub?

yes they will
and they will probably need an extra power source

only 5V run through a USB connector
and 5v for 3 HD's is not enough

To all of you crying about lag and kicks, remember… when Jesus died, took him 3 days to respawn. Now THAT is lag.

the power idea itself isnt an issue, the USB hub's power is fine. Im more concerned with speeds. and can i get them to show up as a 1.5TB HDD or im gonna need RAID for that.

Sounds good. But the way you're doing it, it's going to show up as 3 separate 500 GB drives instead of 1 complete 1.5 TB drive.

I'm like 80% sure you're going to need some sort of software or special drive enclosure to get the computer to see it as one whole drive.

yah, ur going to have some voltage issues. aside from that heat is gana be an issue i think with 3 500gb drives crammed into a box. if you catch yourself using it for too long it could over heat. so ventilation is going to be big deal.
and i think through wiring them together they wont be as fast read and write speeds
but i hope to see somthing like that go together

The RAID system has a few arrays namely:
a)Stripping (RAID 0)
b)Mirror (RAID 1)
c)Stripping and Mirror (RAID 0+1)
d)Span (JBOD)
RAID 0 will write to both HD's in a way that if one HD fails, you may not be able to recover data.
On the other hand if you use 'Spanning" it will combine two or more HD's into one and recovery of data is possible.

Why did you do that? you could have pulled this off. RAID on a mac is sorta hard to set up.  You could have used windows/linux.                                                                  This could have been your setup if you hadn't sold the HDDs. Your USB hub is connected to your system and the 3 HDDs. The HDDs are also connected to your PSU.  You would need a PSU to power the setup unless you don't mind burning your USB.  One HDD can be powered by a USB port but not 3.  You can buy the HDDs back, or just ignore this comment.

Its very possible to do this.. i am quite aware but the price> performance wasnt worth it.
