My controller redesign W.I.P
« on: October 30, 2010, 07:31:40 PM »
Heres my controller w.i.p, ill be updating this thread as I go. Ive started on the case, moving the left thumbstick to where the d-pad usually is.

Im still deciding on what im going to do for the d-pad buttons

pics!

Here it is sanded down a bit, I just need to fill in those little gaps around the thumbstick

I got the thumbstick all wired up and working, ive also extended the wires for the d-pad buttons, wires everywhere!

now to get some paint

It just needs some clear coat now.

Im going to try use a psp nub for the d-pad, heres my first attempt at etching a pcb for it

my sharpie skills arent too good, the traces are off by a couple mm so it dosn't work as planned, im going to try out that press and peel printer paper so I can design the PCB on the computer and get the right width of the traces and whatnot.

I use Epoxy. But that looks like Bondo in the picture.

Pepboys or some autobody shop would probably sell Bondo. (never bought any, so shop around the net to see who does).

Home Depot or Lowes sells epoxy

home depot sells bondo, they also sell other Flexable fillers, and fiberglass fillers depending on how much streingth you need. bondo is generally red in collor.

it dosnt really matter what filler you use, as long as your pieces are properly expoxied together underneath the surface. If your bond flexes the filler will crack. "flexable fillers" only flex so much...not much lol

phantomz: hows the dpad plan looking?

rafaliyo: thats a type of puddy where you mix the two halves and it hardens; then sand it down like in the pictures above.

matt: i gotta take a trip to home depot someday to get some bondo (i never looked there)

any type of bog filler will do, i just used some auto body filler and hardener i had in the garage. ive just ordered some heat transfer paper to print out the design for the psp nub/dpad so it will take a week or two to get here from china.

still not sure how im going to mount it on the controller, i might have to paint it again afterwards.

small update, i finally got round to fixing the pcb for the dpad. i still need to trim it down to size to see if it works, so here it is so far

edit: so i got it all fitting nice, soldered in the wires, but now the wires prevent it from sitting flush against the pspnub... so its back to the drawing board and to etch another pcb, im going to extend it a few mil and have all the solder pads on one side.

Im going to have to sand down the controller case again, as theres a small hairline crack around the thumbstick. also the clear coat i used was a piece of :censored: and i now have yellow areas all over it from a very very light spray.

it might take me a while but ill update this thread when its completely finished and looking nice.  :victory:

ok so this is project nowhere near being finished, but it will stay that way if i don't bother to update this

ive finally got some more time to work on this, and get the psp nub sorted.

first off, all credit goes to spurgurgle for the idea, he was the first to do this on a CG controller a while ago, im using a matrix board so its a bit different

My first attempt at this I tried spurgurgle's method using wire through the inner piece of the nub, i never really got it to work consistently so i tried a different approach

this is the revised PCB with the solder pads all on one side

here it is secured to the pcb with hot glue

a video will be up shortly.

here you can see the crack that formed

heres the placement of the pspnub, the hole is a little bigger than i would have liked, but it should work out after a bit more sanding.
