Questions about flashing

I have searched this couldnt find what i was looking for.
Do i need :
VIA VT6421A IDE & SATA RAID PCI Controller Card
or will any sata card work or just use my sata pc connection?

Whats the best program to use to flash dvd drives?
 and do I use the latest updates?

And any other info i might need to make this easy?
