All credit for this Idea goes to Crazy for his work on the xbox mp3 controller. White top was thinking about a vu meter for the ps3 controller. But there was no audio signal. So I came up with add an mp3 player.
Here's the plan. To install a cheap mp3 + video player into the ps3 controller , with a built in amp and speakers. I toyed around with the idea of putting in a bluetooth headset into the controller with a switch to go from mic to mp3. But for now I will just keep it simple.
I checked the lay out of the controller and the mp3 player. The best location is right above the ps button. So relocation of sel and start are needed. They are going to be relocated up by the shoulder buttons on each side of the screen. The speakers will be inside the handle .
Also I'm thinking about the chotto mod for the ps3 and adopting the technique for switching the usb. Since the ps3 recognizes mp3 player as mass storage, the ps3 can read/write to the mp3 player. The one I want to use , uses micro usb just like the controller.

I really like this idea. I even have a small amp and speakers powered by 3v. I think i might do some design work while I wait for parts for my other projects. Much props to crazy for his work on the xbox mp3 controller.

you could do it similar to the chotto shot mod for the psp , I mean by switching the usb between controller and the ipod. so you could charge/data both from 1 usb cord. Maybe even make it dock-able.
And touch screen means very few extra buttons.
I checked the dimensions compared to the controller, and it would fit nicely right above sel and start. With little speakers on the top on each side by the shoulder buttons.
Well, after looking at prices for those ipod touches, I looked at big lots and found this.
25$ no touch though.

I just realized a good use for this idea. Video walk through of games. You get lost press pause and check the video.
I have some audio stuff laying around but I found this , usb rechargeable powered speakers.

maybe consider getting one of these cheap rip off touch nanos from somewhere like deal extreme, id expect it to be probably more modder friendly

unless you want to drop the cash on an official one.

Thanks phantomz0 . I had not looked there yet. My experience is it takes for ever with shipping from DX. But I like that device a lot.
Well I found a mp3/video player I had laying around. The hold switch broke so I didn't mess with it anymore. Its charging now. The device works Just don't know if the battery will hold a charge. The battery is a 3.7 v 350mah. Nice size. Will take some pics l8r. Side note: I remember the video comes up sideways on this thing.
So should I try it with this piece of junk and build something now or wait for the cheap wannabe ipod touch from DX?

den i think you mite want to draw up what you want to do all your plans and all then price all your stuff up if ok draw what you want make a few designs see which will go well with the stuff your doing then think about building it ( just an idea ) try the old player if all goes well try a better play and upgrade from there.

just like crazys controller once done im sure he will make a new one with better stuff on it smaller screen and all.

Thanks white. I did some design work, sorry I didn't post. I can't order anything right now all my funds are tied up. The mp3 player i have right now , won't boot up. It just gets stuck on initializing.
I did get it to work and hook up to pc through usb, but After looking through the files on it I remembered it needed a special video converter to make the video's. The stuff is included inside the flash but I remember it being crap. Right now I'm giving it another go , we'll see. If I can this one to work Ill use it. If I cant then Ill order the touch wanna be ipod thing from DX.
It's toast. wont boot. Windows won't recognize it. The battery held a charge tho so I kept that. So ordered the lil one from DX. I found this locally at biglots . My girl said she'd buy it. And she agreed to get a clear controller to do the mod with , instead of the sony dualshock3. The mp3 player from Biglots is a lil bigger than I'd like but it might make for a nicer mod. It will fit in the width but its a lil tall. I'll post my designs tonight.

Controller shopping please comment.
You xbox guys will like the first one. The second one looks like this one will fit the bigger touch screen perfectly.

So last night went out shopping and got a nice mp3 player for this. I ended up with the one from biglots. I chose this size as a challenge and to prove that this size device is possible. This mp3 player is about the same size as iphones. I was going to keep that one a secret till I got the mp3 player working but I figured Id explain why I didn't want to wait for the tiny mp3 player from DX. I'm still going to do the mod with the lil mp3 player when it comes. Until then this is what I'm working on. First upload is a video of everything taken apart.

notes. Everything on the bottom of the main board will be relocated externally. (microsd slot, headphone jack and usb) the top of the board is just for the speaker out. So I can trim this board down a lil.
Notes on speaker. I noticed the audio chip has the second output it looks like. It doesn't have to be mono. Take a close look at the last picture. confirmed hooked up second speaker to stereo output. Can I swap the chip for a TDA28221 ? Will it be louder? Will the board power a bigger chip? I have the TDA laying around and I remember it being pretty loud.

should be a direct replacement but Idk. Anyone will this work?
I did have a lil tact switch joystick from a sony phone laying around I was saving for a psp mod but If I can find it I might relocate left analog and put this tact switch in for the directional pad.
The design of the controller makes it difficult but not impossible to relocate buttons. I will probably have to rewire all the buttons if I move any buttons.
So that being said I think Ill redesign the entire faceplate. I might even try to put it into a xbox controller shell? Idk possible? Lots of work to do. So I wont post on this till I get some serious work done. questions and comments and suggestions welcome.

The TDA2822 is not a direct replacement for the XPT4890 because the pin outs are different and way you would calculate gain is a little different.

the XPT4890 is better than the TDA2822 and or the LM386

Lots of fiberglass work will be needed. i do have a suggestion, ill download the pics and post them here once i edit it (it will be rough)

now, i was thinking that in order to have minimal impact you could set it VERY close to the thumbsticks.. but you would need to gauge the throw of the sticks and be careful of them. I have some PS2 controller parts here and it doesnt look like it would be all that impossible. if you are good at molding fiberglass then you shouldnt have any issues.

A suggestion that i have would also be to make a mold. the thing i was thinking of for the backing of where the MP3 player sticks out is the plastic from a micro rc stadium truck. if you have ever made your own RC car, then you know what im talking about... the body kinda has a backward slant to it (where the truck bed would normally be) it is a semi wedge shape that would both offer support and asthetics. also if you decided to use a mixture of a wedge clear plastic piece and some fiberglass you could put some interesting designs into the rear of the rear of the controller....

Thanks for the input guys. The sel start locations are kinda what i was thinking. I'll post some of my designs l8r. I doubt tonight as my iron is heating up now. I'm going to be doing some serious redesigning. Might try to find some psp parts to use for controls. Tonight I am going to do a resistor swap on the mp3 player and start soldering wires to both boards for pinouts . Trying to go through my crap and find a thin ribbon cable I can use to extend the lcd wiring. I got a couple tact switches to get started maybe enough to do the []o^x buttons. I will be using ribbon cables for each side of the controller and one for the middle buttons. I go back and check over the chotto mod again for the usb switch. Hopefully I'll have a pic of something done for you guys l8r.
update: no resistor swap needed. The amp was fine it was the speakers.
Very very happy with the set up now. I dont need 100% vol anymore and I gain a lot of low end. Got the lay out figured out and the design is settled. Sel and start and PS are only buttons relocated. Usb stays where it is just a data switch between the mp3 and controller. The mp3 player's microSD are getting moved . I am going to add an extension on the LCD wires , using super flat ribbon cable from a smashed printer. (that was a fun day)

After the clay mold is done, I do a negative mold out of this stuff kinda like rubber cement. Then I'll do a fiberglass layup into that negative mold and press whats left of the ps3 controller into that layup. Wait till hard peal the "rubber" mold back and finish.
The parts where you see controller through the mold will be cut out.

its a positive mold.. like a 1 off... then you make a cast of the mold, then in the cast you mold your controller.. i think i said that right...

he is basically going to make a copy of the controller with the clay. but in fiberglass or bondo or bondo glass or some other material.

and i agree that this is going to be pretty crazy. at least you have enough time for it!

Fookz - If I wire 2 woofers stereo = clips out.
if i run 2 lil speakers any config = ok
2 lil any config + mono woofer parallel = ok
2 lil mono + mono woofer all parallel = loud but lil one distort a lil on bass notes when loud.
have not tried 2 woofers mono yet.
so Im thinking about doing some simple filtering.

When you say that you wire the woofers in stereo, do you mean that you wire each speaker to a separate output or are they wired as if the speakers are connected together?

*Same with the 2 little speakers in any configuration, Are they in series or parallel when you run them in mono?

How many outputs are there? just two?

When you say something is wired mono, do you mean just 1 output is connected?

When you say the 2 little speakers and 1 woofer are wired parallel, your speakers cut out.... you're loading the amp. watch it man you could overheat the poor chip if it hits a large note.

lets see what we can do first before we design a filter.

by stereo i mean two out puts. the 2 v01 and v02 and a common ground. by mono i mean just v01 and v02. I never connected any speakers in series. Always parallel.
so when I have 2 woofers hooked up with v01 going to one and v02 to the other and a common ground it clips out(cyclic like a clock). when I have 2 lil speakers hooked up any way IM fine. even with a woofer hooked up on both v01 and v02, mono.
I just hooked up to woofers mono = OK!
thats what IM going with.

Wow thats alot of work, but good way to start off the molding process, Its so funny, I have done molding for years, and wouldnt of thought of doing it that way, and I have done clay molding before, also used plexiglass to form things also.

This is something I made using the same process Im using now. I used acrylic resin to make a cpu intake fan cover . The mold was used on many things later tho.

My mold is getting some design tweeks. Do to the size of the woofers I'm using I need to make some changes. I can simplify the design by putting the speakers in the controller handles. This calls for me swapping the regular dual shock motors for lil vibrators I was saving for psp rumble if I want to keep the rumble. I could care less if i have rumble but just because I have the smaller motors ready to go I'll use them. Which means the mold gets real easy . I'll post new mold tomorrow.
here you go new mold pics. I trimmed down the original mp3 player back plate. It clear painted plastic. So I might scratch a design into the paint and let the lcd back light show through my design.Also I will be using the original mp3 player faceplate as a cover for the lcd.Trimmed down a lil on the top and bottom.
I also trimmed out the stuff from the controller.

problem in dev. I lost the main board for the MP3 player. So dev is on hold until it is found or a replacement is found. The store I bought this from doesn't have anymore and none in warehouse. So I might be starting over with the lil mp3 player from DX.

OK update found it. I actually I hid it and forgot about hiding it. But I am still thinking about just using the wanna be ipod touch nano from dx , and making it dock-able. being it uses the same style connection as real ipod devices the mold should work for the iphone mod just with a few minor alterations.
