Playstation 3 handheld (updated 8/27/11)
« on: August 24, 2011, 08:18:38 PM »
I am adding more pics when i can.  I am still working on the wireless part if anyone can help figure out how to send audio and video.

PS3 Handheld
This is my blog about making a PS3 handheld and I hope it helps other people make one also!
I am writing this blog as i make it so bare with me as i may take a couple days to post a new step but I will try my best to keep it updated.

7/18/2011:
The way this will work is I will have a wireless AV transmitter and receiver and not actually fit a ps3 into a handheld (obviously).  I am in the waiting process of having this being delivered but the one I got is a 2.4GHz transmitter receiver combo (http://www.dinodirect.com/2-4GHz-4-Channel-CCTV-Wireless-AV-Receiver-and-1000mW-Transmitter-2-4G-1W.html#)
Do not use. ITS JUNK!

The next thing I'm going to get is a battery so i don't have to have it plugged in all the time. Since the screen and receiver have 12v inputs (thank god) it makes things a little easier.  So I ordered a 12v battery with 4800mah rechargeable battery. (http://cgi.ebay.com/CCTV-CAMERA-12V-RECHARGEABLE-BATTERY-PACK-CHARGER-LCD-/270718231581?pt=US_Batteries&hash=item3f0810641d)  If link is dead search ebay for it.
Rechargeable Battery
Parts List:
Along with the two items above I am also using.

A dual shock 3 controller that I got off ebay for a somewhat cheap price.
    4.3" car monitor.
Broken psp I got off of ebay.  I only need the shell, buttons, and switches.
A sheet of sintra for adding to the case.
A couple small things include 2 analog sticks for psp, leds for some cools lights :) ,  and maybe some tact switches.
    A/V to cat5 converter.

Construction  8/1/2011
Today's note.  I have found out that with my setup using a wireless router it will not work with the A/V transmitter so for the time being i will continue to make this but it will have to be wired.  If anyone has an idea of how to make it work with the router (maybe converting tv signal to packets?)  please let me know!

Here you see my dremel skills. Highlighted spots are where I dremeled.

I'm going to try and use the psp home, start, and select buttons but this screen fits in just perfect in height so i have to put new tact buttons on the bottom for that.

Today I made the d-pad, and fit the screen in.  I am still waiting for a few things to come from china so it might be a week or so. Wiring this will be a :censored: but I can do it hopefully haha.  I also did some more dremeling as you can see in the picture below.  I dont have much time on the weekend to work on this but I will post more when I can!

you do know that the PSP will already do that with the PS3 right?

It sends the video and sound over wifi. And the function is built into the XMB Menu.

If your talking about remote play, that only works with a few games.

You should have fit a ps3 into a handheld... I'm not even sure how this is going to work.

No it is a 4.3" screen for a car reverse camera.  It has 2 video inputs and that's all. I kind of know what I'm going to do for sound though.

i remember the xbox one too, they did it with a baby monitor i think.

this is a pretty neat project, i like the fact that your putting it in a psp, definitely adds to the sony feel.
My systems:  -PSP 2001, CFW and PSP 3000 shell.  -PSP 1001, LED mods, custom firmware, speaker mods, sound reactive LEDs.  -Black NDSL, LED mod, 0.5x and 2x speed mod.

A lot of people are using the old ps1 screen from the console too.

Glad to see I am not the only one who has thought of this.
Wireless you are going to run into problems. 1 big one is lag.
The way i was thinking about doing it was ...
1 Put a PS3 dual shock 3 or an after market controller into a psp shell.
2 hook a wireless a/v transmitter to the standard video out on the ps3.
3 Install wireless receiver in the psp shell hooked up to the the 4.3 screen.
I have already tested a version of this and the lag was horrible. Maybe you will have better luck with your transmitters.
For sound ,since your screen does not have audio... you can wire in a small amp/ speaker combo... boom done. If you need more info on amp chips etc let me know.

1TONpete I have tried the wireless av transmitter that i listed and there was no lag but the interference with other stuff like the bluetooth in the controller was so bad it wasn't watchable.  A new idea i thought of was use a "balun" which can put tv signals through ethernet but the ones that are out there will not work with routers because they only send raw signal and not convert them to packets or anything.  And then I would put a pico router in with that if i got it to work.

it could be a little difficult (maybe even expensive) to do it that way, over wifi or bluetooth you would need some sort of converter, and then on top of that the stuff to send it over wifi or bluetooth.

Does anyone think this will work? http://www.netburner.com/downloads/sbl2e/SBL2e_datasheet_header_pin_description.pdf  If I just connect the audio and video to the analog to digital pins?

edit:Still waiting for a couple of things from china its taking forever!
