well thats how i  have my TV hooked up and theres no sound from pc to my tv being set up that way so i wasted the $40 bucks for the wrong cable .

they do make one so that you want the dvi to dvi hook up for sound or you have to get the reagular monitor cable with the audio cord also attatched to it.

my monitor has built in speakers, but i dont use them. i just want it so i dont have to unhook a cable from one pc to the other. >:(. and niether pc has a video card or anything. just vga ports. and monitor has vga and dvi-d. i will use vga for one computer, and the dvi-d to vga for the other. will it work like that?

Yes It might all you can do is try it, and see, you wont hurt nothing so just plug it and see if you get sound .I thought you had a video card with both ports and wanted to use a dual monitor, or two pcs with one computer, either way you should be able to do it, hook it up and find out,

let us know if it worked

EDIT you might have to change the mode , just like switching it from the 360 to the pc
