120w Led Grow Panel
« on: September 24, 2011, 09:21:07 AM »
Hi all
Iam wanting to build a 120w Led Grow Panel like this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LED-120W-120-Watts-Triband-7-1-1-Plant-Lamp-Grow-Light-/290475936479?pt=UK_HomeGarden_Garden_PlantsSeedsBulbs_JN&hash=item43a1b70adf
If it is going to be cheaper than buying this.

I am really good at soldering etc and have all the gear for it but i lack in electronic curcuit design, anyway here is what i need help with and led's i want to use:

- curcuit board schematics for homemade etching or pref cheaper option breadboard
- LED'S i would like to use Bridgelux and Epistar leds or another good make if possible
- Cooling as i know at least 25% power to the leds is turned into heat on the board ( i think )
- what led chips and other components i will need
- I will design the case for it but these are the specs i need:

Specification:

LED Configuration:

112 x 1w LEDs

Power consumption:
110w

Lumens:

≥4200 Lm

Color:

Red/Blue/Orange/White

Wavelength:

Red : 630nm, 77 leds

Blue : 460nm, 15 leds

Orange : 610nm,10 leds

White: 15000-20000K, 10 leds

Suggested Lighting Area:

1 - 1.5 m2

Size:

Ф 400 x 212 x 62mm

Input voltage:
AC85~264V

Input current:

≤0.5-1A

Work frequency:

50/60 Hz

Working environment:

-20~40 degrees c

Inner box:

455 × 275 × 110mm

I would be happy if someone could help me out please and a really big thank you for any advice.

well right off the bat some obvious things are 112 1W leds would be 112W of power usage.
you've also got a pretty large range of input voltage? would those be different connectors or plugs or ... as well as whether the input would be single or three phase AC

As far as I know those 1w leds usually work on 12 volts so if you could get an ac adapter that puts out 12 volts(like the ones on modems)your power problem would be solved.
Sometime ago I made a small led panel of about 10-12 blue leds and they were powered via usb(5v) and the were quite bright too.All the leds on that were connected in parallel with a 10ihm resistor.

I have an adaper that has multi v outputs so perfect, do you know of any good led's for this and which ones to buy. Then i can work out the resistance needed

as far as I know the 1watt leds do produce heat and are run on a heatsink most of the times
If you use normal 5mm leds they would require lesser voltage and wouldn't produce much heat.5mm blue leds are available at almost any electronic shop and they are quite bright too and run on about 3.6 volts

1W or other "power" LEDs require a constant current driver, as they are prone to current run away and hence hot and painful death.

Power LEDs are also far more costly than standard LEDs so I wouldn't expect you to get much change from £119 for 119 LEDs! Add a PCB, heatsink, constant current driver, AC/DC converter and housing I doubt you'd build it for less than what the seller is asking for them!

I think grow lights are also pulsed, hence the frequency on the listing, you'd need a control circuit for that too.

You could certainly build a lower spec version for less but to get the same result as you would from that product, the cheapest method - in my opinion - would be to buy that product!
