Blu Ray drive prob
« on: February 26, 2012, 02:05:03 PM »
Tried a new tray and motor but used the same laser assembly. Loads fine and laser moves but noticed laser only shines red, no violet. Ive heard a bad laser will cause the drive to not spin. (which is my prob). Seems to make no diff. whether its blu ray, dvd, or CD media or with cover on or off. I would like to know if i should try something simple or if a new laser or drive is needed.

I would say it needs a new laser, this systems are so hard to determain what is wrong with them, usually from what I have noticed if the blu-ray laser goes out it usually still will play cd's or play dvd disk.

Im guessing im just gonna pay 20 bucks more and go with a complete drive instead of just a new laser.  Are these just "plug and play" style.....no messing with drive keys like an Xbox uses? Can i just take it out and replace with same model and have it working?

The Blu-Ray drives are married  to the ps3 so you can't just take another blu-ray drive and plug it in and expect it to work.

your best bet is just change out the laser! or you gotta do a bunch of other work.  Shown here

correct me if I'm wrong but the blu-ray drive can be swapped as long as you attach the old drive's PCB board  to the new drive since the PCB contains all the keys and stuff.

again I could be wrong and it might be diff for diff models
