Lit Dome/Guide button

Introduction
In this section of the tutorial we'll be covering how to light up you dome/guide button using 5mm leds.

Parts Needed
  • 2x 5mm leds
  • Resistor (depending on led used.
  • 30awg wire
  • Bread board

Tools Needed
  • Solder Iron
  • Hot glue gun
  • 7-10mm drill
  • Wire cutters

Difficulty Rating: 3/5

Average Time to Complete: 15-45mins

Notes: Take extra care drilling the button.

Step By Step Tutorial
1- After taking your controller apart using the above guide, solder 2 3inch pieces of wire to a small piece of breadboard.
2- Now glue your breadboard in place on your controller using the hot glue...
(As you can see on this controller I have a rapid fire chip already installed so I just glued the new breadboard over it making sure there is no shorting out of the chip. You don't have to do this if you don't want to)
3- Connect the 2 wires from the breadboard on to the ground and VVD. The pad type im using is CG but I also use these connections on matrix pads as they don’t have a switched 3v.

4- Clamp your dome in a pair of pliers

And carefully drill out the inside. I used a 7mm drill bit for this but had to move it a bit to get the whole insides out.
Once you’re happy with the drilling cut a small notch in the larger of the 2 tabs on the side of the button to move the wires through.
5-Take your two 5mm leds (Other sizes and types of leds can be used I just like 5mm because they are cheap and easy to get) bend the legs on both in the same direction then solder them together. and solder on two 3inch pieces of wire to them
6- Now check if your leds fit inside the button. (if they don't drill out /shave out a bit more of it..) and check that they are working with a battery. Then fill half the button with hot glue and press in the leds making sure they are point straight down into the buttons (Any slant on them will result in a badly lit dome.) Once you’re happy with the led placement fill the button with glue up to the height of the original plastic X. If you go too high the button will be stiff and too low means you have to push the button further.
The finished button should look like this:

7- Now check the polarity of your bread board and lit dome then solder the wires in place on the bread board

FAQ/ Troubleshooting
    If the led's aren’t lighting up
    • Check the polarity of the leds using a battery
    • Test the leds with another power source
    • Check for any short circuits

yes it is in the CG type contoller. but not in the matrix....

as i said in the tut i use this on cg pads becuase its a switched 3v.
but i still use it on matrix as matrix dont have a switched 3v....
to do it on a matrix so it's lighting with the pad. (turning on and off with the pad)

just add in a transistor similar to the ones used for modded matts 555timer rapid fire. the 2n2222 will do fine.

connect it up like so
(B)base to a switched suplly (the 2v used in installing most rf codes will do fine.)
(C)collector to the fixed 3v pwoer supply used in cg pads and above in this tut

then connect the (E) emitter to your leds/breadboard.

can i use just 1 led  ......5mm High-Brightness Ultraviolet LED (2-Pack) Model: 276-014...from radio shack?

it would depend on the FW voltage of the led. look on the back of the pack. use a led resistor calculator, the supply curent for cg is 3v,

and also 1 led wont give a very good light spread..... and if ur thinking of using a uv like u siad above.... well uv purple through a green dome... it dont look good trust me i tried it on a wired pad... cos every uv led i've found needs like 4.7fv and the wireless pads only supply 3.....

I simply used just one of these and it worked out just perfectly :) Perfect amount of brightness n all. Im extremely happy too because i was able to get the glue just right so its not too stiff or too soft :D

umm u might hav issues with that led adventually look at the forward voltage on it....

not 1.9 (typical) 2.4 (max...) ur 360 pad will run at 3V on AA batterys and 2.6 on a plug and play battery...... so u will fry that led in time.... not straight away but it will fry...... and being glued in it'll be a :censored: to replace... so i advise putting at least a 10ohm resistor on it to stop the frying!!!!

ok i will do. The only reason i used them is because my radioshack is gay and doesnt carry everything it should (small store) (They dont even carry an 8 pin IC socket :() so i couldnt find any with the proper voltage. it was either too high or 2 low. They arent actually a :censored: to get out. Its quite easy. Just heat up the hot glue gun and wipe any hot glue dripping from the gun. Stick the metal part onto the glue untill it melts n move it around a bit. then pull on the wires attched to the led and out it comes very easily.

hey I did this mod along with the abxy mod and added 4 more led's the voltages are as follows.
CG2 Controller
white 3.0-3.4v
blue 3.0-3.4v
rgb slow rotation 3.0-3.4v [used on dome looks cool]
I attached them all to the breadboard and hooked the breadboard up as you did but when my rumblers kick on everything except the dome flickers to a low light, is it a problem of no resistor? board? or did I just mess up somewhere. currently there are 12 Leds in total, I would post a pic but it's taken apart right now as I'm still tinkering.
I also have A and B remapped to the back of the controller grounding to TP22/TP2

the rumblers draw alot of power and with the leds  on also drawing power it is just not enough so more power goes to the rumblers when they are  on and therefore just not simply enough power.

I understand that but is there a way to resolve the flickering or is it one way or another?
