Pete's 1949 chevy panel truck. electrolysis!

The truck is my fathers old truck and has been sitting for a long time. It was barn kept for many years but has not in the past couple . This has taken its tole. before it gets any worse. I am going to do something about it.

The truck is a 1949 chevy 1 ton 137" wheel base deluxe Panel truck. It has a 1949 216C.I. straight 6 in it for now. This is not the original motor. but its correct type. I will be dropping in a 1970 Buick 455 big block I built last year.

So onto the electrolysis.
The fender is the one you can see in the pics above.
Here is the tank set up on 12V 2.2 amps.

I made some adjustments. added more positive voltage sacrificial steel on top of the fender. Then I rewired with 10-2 house wire. added a electric golf cart charger I had laying around. 36 volt at over 20 amps. it cranked out hydrogen after that.

Eventually I pulled it out of the tank and cleaned it up a lil. just a hose and dish washing sponge.

I cleaned it up and let it dry and spray it with a self etching primer just to keep the rust from coming back while I get ready for the body work on the fender.

I use that charger for everything. But not rc. Charges my kids electric toys, my controllers , and the main use is for the PS3-Go.

I put one of my hoods in the tank today.
This one is actually worse than the hood on the truck, but I want to see how long it takes to bring this thing back.



Here is the first half in the tank. I should have built a larger frame but I used something pre fabed. The hood is like 2" to wide to fir in the tank even at an angle.
 
Pull it out and flip it over tomorrow.

36 volts seemed kinda high for electro rust removal but it still looks fantastic!


Was the stripped bare metal pitted at all?

Fookz... The metal was pitted in parts where the rust was real bad. But I am very happy with the out come so far.

It does look like you may want to try and tune down the voltage a bit. Maybe could get away with a deeper bath.. I really don't know all that much about this stuff but it seems it is pitting pretty bad. Cant wait to see it when its done!!

Yeah I agree you should try a lower voltage. If you're seeing hydrogen and oxygen bubbles that's bad... lower the voltage until you see minimal bubbling.

Well right now it bubbles like ginger ale.  I will be keeping my eye out for a regular 12v auto charger.
