PC rig ideas.
« on: May 19, 2013, 03:06:22 PM »
Hey all. Thinking of making me a gaming rig or at least something to run the minecraft server off with a touch more power.

Here's my initial thoughts. Haven't shopped price. And gfx card may either need downgraded or wait a bit longer to afford it.

Would love some input as been out of pc game for 6 years at least. I'm a Mac guy at heart and always will be. This is just a toy purely for gaming every so often.

Drop the freezer pro and grab a Gaia or a hyper 212. Also no need for that much ram, so drop the ram down to 16 and grab a bigger ssd. I would say a vertex 3 or force gt as the controller chips are better.

Agree with Vision drop the RAM to 16gb Don't need all that unless your running CAD programs. I would go with the vextex SSD read and write is a good speed, but size honestly doesn't matter as long as its over 60Gb. If you do run games it won't make much of a difference in loading speed if you install games and run it off the SSD. The 1tb WD is a good idea for storage and Game install.

CPU cooling I would say to go water cool if you can spare the pounds. I went with a Corsair H100 water cool for my AMD processor very cool running I dropped Enermax batwing 120mm and two 400mm fan for the nice pull direction. Everything runs silent hardly any noise. Temperature wise over clocked to 4.2Ghz somewhere around 31 degree Celsius to 44 degree celsius on normal load increase to 30 degree under gaming.

What case you might install all this into and are you going to drop in lights???

After looking again the ssd you have is fine. I thought it was an intel but the M4 are very nice ssd's. You could drop the ram to 16 and drop the raptor for a 1 tb wd red drive and bump the vid card up to a titan. Seems like you are going all in so why not get the best? As far as water goes it is nice but a good hyper 212 eve with some sythe slip streams or noctua would do just as good as the h100. Case is going to be a big choice with all that hardware but I am nmmore concearned with your power supply choice. I would go with a good seasonic or corsair. Something above the 800 mark would do. Nice build though. Got me all jelly :)

Agree with vision, get a hyper 212 evo, still the best value for money cooler. No need for watercooling, unless you are going for huge overclocks
As for the m4 I wouldn't swap it for another, great ssd very very reliable. However it is aging technology now, so you could consider replacing it with something newer if you want pure speed.

Nah not going water route initially. Might  retrofit. I actually do some video and graphics work and may take up having a go at 3d modeling as work might be getting a 3d printer so I need the ram. Especially if I'm keeping mc server running when I do. So anyone got links to the cooler and gpu you recommended. I have a 750 or 850 watt psu I think. Cool master one I think.

Hoping to house it all in the old antec900 I have.

Well a MC server will only use 512mb stock. you can set it up to use 1 gig in the cfg. Even 3d modeling +mc + rendering would not use that much ram. Rendering is usually more gpu dependent. If you think you need 32 then by all means go for it. As a matter of fact you could set up a ramdisk and run your MC server off of it.

The hyper 212 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103099

Grab 2 of these fans for push pull  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835226013

This is the Titan  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121724

If that is to rich then I would at least go for a 680  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121705

I would love to see some pictures when you get the parts!!!!

Well i currently have 7gb set aside for mc. As in idle with no players we use about 300-400 as its got a few plugins.
And I want to be able to run the server and play without creating lag.

Also video rendering when doing it for 1080p video is very intensive as you need a large ram for it to cache it all. Especially if you want it to render really fast.

Will take a look at those parts later.

Cool. Grab the 32 and run an 8 gig ramdisk. put the MC server on that and dedicate 8 more to the ram. Should put you at the fastest MC server around lol.

Will take a look at that as it sounds good. I have a 60mb unlimited symmetrical Internet link. So should be a nice speed boost.

Well if your net speed is blazing, The cpu will be plenty powerfull, a ramdisk will load faster then any ssd is capable of, and an extra 8 gigs ram for the server itself?!!!??
THAT WILL BE ONE BLAZING FAST MINECRAFT SERVER!!!!!!!!!!!

btw , what speed is that ram? will you be overclocking that cpu to about 4.5ghz?

The ram I think is 2400mhz and I'm not sure about oc with just fan based cooling. That may come in part with a water cooling system.

Hyper = AIO water cooling. In other words you can get great Overclocks with the hyper 212 especially if you change out the fans to push/pull. I have a hyper 212 non evo and run my Phenom II x 6 on 3.5 with my hyper and temps are super cool. Trust me, you can get a nice clock on an I7 with hyper. I have seen guys pushing 5.5 on air with them.

Yees sir. the hyper is a beast. It is seen as one of, if not the best air coolers around. Only things that compete are the noctua coolers and the megahelms. Both of which are 3 times the price of the hyper 212.

Sabertooth is a good board. You can always look at the offerings from MSI and Gigabyte as well. All are very nice boards.

It does not. But I would assume you have a micro center close? if so then they have a 40$ discount on the boards when you purchase the 4770k right now.

Thanks nev. wil take a look. Seems pretty similar apart from th gfx card. Don't need a psu. Btw am I correct in saying the minimum parts I need are CPU mobo ram ssd or hdd for it to work. As thinking of getting minimum and adding o it other upgrades over next month or so.

Depends on if the mobo has onboard graphics. I do not think the sabertooth does. SO some sort of graphics card would be needed.

All LGA1150 motherboards support onboard graphics cards, they have a video output on the back I/O plate. More to do with the CPU, the i7 has  a Integrated HD 4600 Graphics and the i5 a HD4000. They support low end needs and can even play a surprising number of games. Rome Total War, BF2, Counterstrike: GO etc...

I would go for something like this, Closed loop watercooling so you can OC the CPU reasonably if you dont want to deal with that go for a Hyper 212 probably the best air cooler for sub £30, you could go for 16GB of RAM off the bat but not much point, PC case if personal choice, Fractal and Corsair Obsidian look sweet IMO, you might as well wait a few weeks until the 760's are announced, Solid State for OS and programs, a Cheep Optical drive because they are useful but not really used. A well known PSU because you want clean power if you OC a little. I just threw this together in like 20 mins so i dunno about RAM timings with that Mobo. Major part of building a PC Is spending hours researching it
