Looking to commission a Modded DUALSHOCK 4 Controller
« on: November 25, 2013, 03:28:25 PM »
Hello again everyone!

I am here once again, I have completed ONE successful mod of my Dualshock 3 controller for my PS3, using C_Peck's L3/R3 relocation guide on YouTube.

Part 1: PS3 Dualshock 3 R3/L3 Relocation Guide Part 1
Part 2: PS3 Dualshock 3 R3/L3 Relocation Guide Part 2

Let me cover my background info in bullet points:

- Avid Gamer, Playstation Fangirl
- Physically Disabled, Extremely weak muscles
- Normally have difficulty using L3/R3, L2/R2

Now that the great PS4 is upon us, it should be a joyous time full of heavy duty intense gaming sessions that run into the wee hours of the morning. Not for me :(

Back when I did my L3/R3 mod on my dualshock 3 (Pictured), I literally EXCELLED at gaming. I was on par with the average player and gave my brother a run for his bragging rights, and pulled off some amazing things in games like Battlefield 3. But most of all, I was having FUN! I LOVE Playstation and have always found that the controllers have for the most part been good to me with my physical limitations.

I was not worried at all about the Dualshock 4. But once I finally got my little hands on it, I realized how inaccessible it suddenly became, which killed my drive to play, pretty much making my PS4 a nice desk ornament.

I've been doing lots of YouTube studying of what the inside of the controller looks like. It's really not that different from the Dualshock 3.

When I choose to do a mod, it takes a LONG time, because of my physical strength. I cannot unscrew screws, I can't pop open controllers. All I can really do is have the stready hand with the soldering iron, but even then I am extremely new to soldering and don't feel comfortable enough doing something as challenging as I am about to suggest. When I did my L3/R3 relocation, I had help from my Mom and Dad. My Mom is calm, but she's the type of person who stabs herself with the screwdriver, or opens a controller and buttons go flying. My Dad, is  nightmare with tiny electronics. He is rough and has an extremely short temper and doesn't understand why things need to be done a certain way and his eyesight isn't as good as it once was. So me modding is pretty hair raising and stressful haha! And it takes forever to get them both coordinated and wrangled into doing something.

For now I am hoping to switch out the springs on L2/R2 on my DUALSHOCK 4 with springs from a DUALSHOCK 3, and if they will fit, the button contact pads of a DUALSHOCK 3 as well. I find that L1/R1 on the DUALSHOCK 4 to be quite snappy compared to the DUALSHOCK 3. I want to switch the springs because the DUALSHOCK 3 springs are much easier to depress than the stiffer trigger springs of the 4.

All this requires of me is to get my Mom to open the controller, I can do the rest.

Now, ideally I'd like to have a DUALSHOCK 4 controller with:

- DUALSHOCK 3 analogue sticks: Not the thumbsticks, the actual analogue sticks that solder to the board. The DS3 sticks are much easier for me to manipulate than the DS4 sticks. I wasn't anticipating them to be so stiff.
- Relocated L3/R3 buttons to the same place I have the new buttons on my DS3, but with the "Boolim 10mm Arcade Buttons" as seen here:
http://etokki.com/Arcade-Buttons/Boolim-BL110-M-R-Red or another similar arcade type button, with no "click"

(The buttons I used previously stick out too far and the metal is beginning to rust and tarnish)

- DUALSHOCK 3 L2/R2 springs and if they'll fit, L1/L2, R1/R2 button contact pads to reduce the "click" or "snappyness"

I live in Saskatchewan Canada, so that may factor in who wants to take on this job.

I'd like to get a rough estimate of what it would cost to have this done as well as a timeframe. I really want to get into some Battlefield 4!

Thank you so much for your time!
Moosh/Melissa K.

Thanks but I really like the DUALSHOCK 4 otherwise, it's a great looking and feeling controller, and I like the new features, it's just the buttons and sticks are too stiff

I'm willing to pay someone to do this :)

Wow a fellow handicapped gamer! (I have Muscular Dystrophy)  I also used the relocated L3/R3 mod on my DS3.  Have you had any luck modding the DS4?  I have no issues with the DS4 except with L3/R3.  So I've been getting killed a lot in BF4/Ghosts since I can't run HAH!  I put my tact switches for L3/R3 on the back of the controller but I like your placement.  Is the button you use really easy just to bump and have it work?

I believe we are making progress, a member named RDC has messaged me and is working on a Dualshock 4 for me :)

When I placed my L3/R3 there, the intention was to press them with the pad of the inside of my hands where my index finger starts, but as I learned, I don't hold the controller in a traditional way (at least the Dualshock 3, with the DS4, I am forced to hold it traditionally due to the triggers being default). When I use my DS3, I rest the controller on my knee and I have my hands pretty much on top of the controller, and then I press my L3/R3 with the first section of my ring fingers. (where a ring would be if I wore one).

As far as pressure needed to press them, it is less than the clicky tactile buttons I've bought for other uses. There is no "click", it's a smooth press.

Add me on PSN if you'd like!, My PSN is MOOSH89 :)

Cool!  I'm glad you found someone to help.  RDC sounds really familiar, I think he is the guy who does modding for a living or at least a major hobby.  I'm not brave enough to crack open one of my new DS4's yet.  I'm hoping someone does another youtube tutorial.  Are you going to use the red buttons you linked to in your original post for the L3/R3?  I assume if you hold L3 down it will continue to run with that mod?

My PSN is Kamakzie1976 feel free to add! :D

It sounds like the red buttons I linked to may be too large on the inside to fit in the controller.

For the "Run" action, you don't need to hold the button to keep running, you just press it once while moving and as long as you're steering the analogue stick, you will keep running. For steadying your scope, you need to hold it. The mod works either way.

I chatted with C_Peck and he said he was going to do another tutorial for the mod on the DS4 soon.

One thing I did differently was I never snipped the tabs that click the tactile button off, so my L3/R3 still function normally as well as with my new buttons on my DS3, which is good because my R3 button didn't take with the solder, but then it was my first time soldering, so I likely didn't put enough on to keep a good connection.

Yeah I didn't do the snip part on my DS3 mod because I figured someone might want to use the controller other than I.  I ordered that CronusMax adapter mentioned by KingMike_OS, I'll let you know how it works.  I'll use it on my 360 (I absolutely HATE the 360 controller!)  I'll PM C_Peck as well and maybe it will grease the wheels. :D

That too was the other reason too for me, in case my brother Jon wanted to go at it when he was home :)

That's cool that you bought the CronusMax, indeed let me know how it is! It looks cool but I sure like the touch pad of the DS4, and I don't like cords and adapters, but otherwise it looks fantastic, it blows my mind how people can come up with these things, and hey, if it helps people like us, I am soo happy for it!

RDC can put a 360 controller into a PS3 controller, had I have known he could do it, I likely would have kept my 360 for exclusives! I too hate the 360 controller and can't use it. I knew the swap could be done but I figured only Ben Heck could do it, and it would be pricey. Damn... Oh well, you live and learn, right?? :)

Actually the CronusMax is supposed to work wirelessly with the 360 using the DS3!  Or DS4!  I am so happy.  You have to set it up with cables initially though.  I guess DS4 also works on the XBone but I'm not getting that anytime soon.

You good with a soldering iron? :D  I'm looking to have L3 and R3 relocated most likely on the back of the Dualshock 4 controller with tact switches.  I've had my father help me the last time by watching Youtube videos doing the mod to a DS3.  I'm a little apprehensive this time though with all the added parts to the DS4.

Wow that would be really awesome.  Would there be a tact switch that would be easy to depress but a little bigger than the tact switches I use on my DS3?  Would it be easiest if I bought a new controller like off Amazon and had it direct shipped to you?  Let me know what would be easiest to get the ball rolling, I really appreciate it!
