modding a ps2

so i picked up a slim ps2 for 10 bucks today. and i just bought a mod chip and im wondering what the must have things are when you modd a ps2. i mod wiis and xbox360's. so i know i can play backups with the mod chip, but can i do anything else with it like a external with all my games on it like i have with my wii and 360? and also i seen this disc that allows you to rip your games to an external that is plugged in tom your ps2, and play them like that are thoses any good or are they crap? this is my first day even thinking about modding a ps2 so im trying to gather all the info i can. any help is always appreciated thanks.

you could add an external drive with your games some games will play great and some might not what chip do you have and whats the ps2 motherboard version so you could get the right diagram for the installation
