RSC (L3) button on elite 1 controller always pressed
« on: May 14, 2020, 01:10:26 PM »
Replaced the analogue sticks on my elite controller and everything seems to work perfectly and has great deadzones... EXCEPT

L3 or LSC is always being registered as pressed.

I checked the test points and using TP21 as GND

-TP106 (LSC) = 4.4 K Ω
-TP107 (RSC) = 6.5 M Ω

With the L3 button pressed TP106 will go to 0Ω like i think it should.

Does it mean anything? Would like some advice on troubleshooting next step because it seems the physical button works. Should TP106 have more resistance? What else could be causing this?

Thanks for any help.
-John

That 4.4k is too low. Clean the board up around where you soldered first with some alcohol and Q-tips in case some solder splash or just something weird there is conducting a little bit.

If it still acts up, pull the Left Stick back off the board and test to see if the motherboard still shows 4.4k or not. If it's not 4.4k anymore, check the stick and see if it reads the 4.4k, and if it shows any Resistance when not pressed then the button in the stick is the issue.

I removed the analogue stick and it seems like the button was working fine (tested with multimeter)

Looked for any solder splash or obvious shorts and cant find any.

Measured resistance across the switch on the board and got 3.3 K Ω

same with across the testing points TP106 and GND.

So apparently the problem is somewhere on the board. Any ideas on how to figure it out from here?

So i kept cleaning the board with a bath of rubbing alcohol and tooth brush and not the resistance across where the chip would be is up to 5-15 M Ω.  So i think i got it! must have been some resin or solder flakes creating a connection somewhere. Time to try to put on another analogue stick and hopefully everything goes well.

Thanks for all the help.

Just to wrap up this thread, its all fixed now. It needed a toothbrush and rubbing alcohol to clean out whatever unseeable thing was causing the short.
