It depends. Softimage and Max are designed for animation and middling for movies and games, whereas autodesk is for cad and engineering applications.

i have a copy of autocad 2009 and 2011 for CNC milling and 3d modeling.

i draw mostly 2d stuff with it.... you can do like 10x more than that though.

just need a good app to make 3D designs of my stuff to see if it looks ok before making the mods
I've use all them but imagesoft was abit on the hard side
max was good and very simple
cad I've not used fully

then dont use autocad as your 3d modeling app its not smooth, its bulky to use.

use 3ds max if you feel good about it so you wont waste time relearning

I have got a friend who is really good with blender, if you want to go open-source then that is the way to go.

Very difficult to get the hang of, though...

3DS Max is good for individual editing,
Maya is great for importing meshes and animating.

Get Maya and 3DS Max

If you want something easier as in software with better UI I recommend
Cinema 4D

I enjoyed 3dsmax, but you will need maya if your animating,
cinama4d is ok, but only good for graphics, like making a youtube backround and combining it with photoshop

Sorry for double post
