Title: 1.5v D battery powered led
Post by: Gizmo613 on October 01, 2014, 10:12:47 AM
Need some help as i am out of stock on batteries. I only have D batteries and i need to make some led lights. I ordered some red and yellow flickering leds and they are 20mA with a drop of 1.8v-2.2v. the d Battery that i have is 1.5v but i measured somewhere between 2-4Amps.

anyone know of a way to power up 2 of these leds with just one d battery?

The simplest solution would be to run 2 of your D cells in series.

If you're wanting to only use a single D cell to power them then you'll need to up the voltage, and since that type of LED has active circuitry in them it needs to be clean enough (less ripple) otherwise it's just going to make them reset over and over and not work correctly. There are loads of LED charge pumps, DC/DC converters and the like that will all do that. You could even try out a Joule Thief and see how that works with them.

Looking into the joule thief method. Definitely want to try it;

all my components came in and the circuit works as it should. But with the flickering leds, they just stay solid like you had suggested RDC.
I have wired 2x D sized batteries to check the functionality of the leds and they flicker just fine. Im trying to figure out a way to modify the joule circuit to change that ac to a dc output at above 2.5v.

EDIT:
LOL never mind, i did some thinking about frequency calculations and i only have to change a capacitor and BAM!!! blinking/flickering leds.
