Title: Reed Switch Security Mod in a DSLite [Tutorial/POC]

REED SWITCH SECURITY MOD IN DS LITE

Background:

Earlier this week [Monday. December 3rd 2007] administrator l0rdnic0 announced a mod for the PSP and PSP slim for improved security which involved the disabling of the psp stock switch and adding a Reed switch.

What is a reed switch you may ask? A reed switch is common in most basic security systems, it is a glass bulb with two unpolarised strips of metal running into it from either side and being seperated marginally in the following manner within the bulb:

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2Fthumb%2Fb%2Fbd%2FReed_switch_%2528aka%2529.jpg%2F800px-Reed_switch_%2528aka%2529.jpg&hash=c9a48271ef9866054480c34f734a17681ae42665)

They are applied in security systems with a magnet which holds the strips together until a door or window etc is opened pulling the magnet from the switch sounding an alarm system.

My dad happens to be an electrician specialising in security systems and has hundreds of these so i thought id try my hand at this mod with some encouragement from l0rdnic0. In Australia reed switches are encased in plastic and epoxy because of glass components, the same is done for mercury switches which is how we keep them legal ;)

ON TO THE TUT!!

You will require:

1) A reed switch
2) A Magnet
3) Ds Lite (or toaster, quoted from *FuFa)
4) Novice soldering/modding skills
5) Some Wire

Method:

1) i'll assume you've alrady dismantled your DS Lite ;)
(Heres a good tutorial, i'll make one for acidmods eventually: http://www.flickr.com/photos/62647765@N00/sets/72157594277451148/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/62647765@N00/sets/72157594277451148/))

2) Use Mr Knee Co's tutorial for disabling the PSP switch or simply remove the switch entirely, or keep it there and just have this as a nice magnet switch.

3) Tin your wire and the reed switch and solder the wire to the reed switch:

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi187.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx234%2FXioN980%2FReed%2520Tut%2F1.png&hash=ab7b5e3ed136b6a1280110ccafcdd95a640f87d9)

4) Now here's a bit of trivia for you involving the ds lites power switch, it has 4 pins, but 3 of them all short out at very important location known as the ground pad, which recieves power from the batteries negative terminal. When the switch is flicked (or magnetised ;) ) the rest of the ds recieves power from the ground/negative signal. So there are two methods of installation here:

4a) Solder directly onto the switch, one of the reed switch wires to the red mark, and the other to any of the  blue ones, they are all connected so it doesn't really matter:

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi187.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx234%2FXioN980%2FReed%2520Tut%2F2.png&hash=451a2e0a49c78c0b588a21e8bcb31a648212d1be)

4b) Use nintendo's test point labelled PWSW (power switch) and any point on the main ground pad, this one requires a bit less soldering skill but the switch isn't exactly the psp d-pad connector D: , this pad connects the three blue labelled pins above:

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi187.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx234%2FXioN980%2FReed%2520Tut%2F3.png&hash=eeb60afc8a0a2d674ed8a220dca58f9d8ff03341)

5) Now, if you decided to keep the switch be sure to route the wires away from it so they dont get jammed in it:

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi187.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx234%2FXioN980%2FReed%2520Tut%2F5.png&hash=62e55dfabd3dbc80e84fff96add4d5dfdb3701a7)

6) The following spot is an ideal location for my chunky, but SAFE reed switch, if you just have the bulb, anywhere will do, if you do have a bulb feel free to illuminate it with an LED, they look very nice:

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi187.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx234%2FXioN980%2FReed%2520Tut%2F4.png&hash=10c6d30d8fed003661ec1f2780b83c21b7b97b42)

7) To test that it will be ok there place the switch down and slowly move the Motherboard over it into its position

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi187.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx234%2FXioN980%2FReed%2520Tut%2F6.png&hash=1ad5e3051fd5bc638dad68523b2909cd6200de6f)

Very Snug :D

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi187.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx234%2FXioN980%2FReed%2520Tut%2F7.png&hash=e878be956d244c6d0a4a071961f87fff041a8d6d)

This is of course not practicaly when performing final reassembly as this is the last part of it, but just allign it and you will be fine, just push the switch square against the BIOS chip that the wifi arial plugs into.

8) Enjoy your added security :D

I was looking for the pictures for this reed switch mod. I am trying to figure out the 2 solder points on the DS mother board. A picture would help. My DS switch was accidently pulled right off the mother board. The tiny pads were ripped off and I cannot soder on the new switch. The Reed switch is exactly what I am looking for.
