hey guys need your help..
can you throw me some ideas how to make a drag race timer..
my idea is when the bike leaves the starting point the clock runs
then when he enters the finish line it will stop..therefore giving us
an accurate run time on 400m sprint..but still i don't know where to start
i want something that is simple..please help where i can start..
thanks..

IR LEDs and receivers maybe??
-
ir was in my mind but the schematics and how to start ad materials to use
are my problem..any help would be much appreciated

Well with one search of my friend google this is what I came up with. http://flyballdogs.com/timer_plans/ (http://flyballdogs.com/timer_plans/)
If that is not what you are looking for then try googling "diy race timer" ...
-
that is a cool find..thanks..
the circuit is kinda confusing can u explain a little bit more..
my knowledge on circuits kinda limited..
btw is the pole for starting only?
what about the finish line pole?
-
to be honest if your knowlegde is that limited then the project would be to complicated for you.
-
oh i see..
this is timer is a lap timer..
how can i add an additional pole for the finish line..
i need a beam on the starting and one on the finish line..
thanks..

Ok. A lap timer is different from a drag race lap timer.
Drag race timers are exactly what they are. Your travel time from start to finish with one lap.
Lap timers are a little more involved because you have more than 1 lap.
The diagram provided in ViSioNXx's post is a little hard to understand because whoever drew it... sucks at drawing schematics lol.
Anyways.... The Infrared beam sensor, Radioshack Part Number 49-551, the project requires is obsolete as of 2009. So you would need to find an alternative.
An alternative to consider is an ultrasonic motion detector. Keep in consideration there is a lag time of 340.29 meters per second with ultrasonic detectors.
So the best way to time vehicles would be infrared detectors. Keep searching on Google until you think you found something suitable for your needs.
