I did not create this tut but wanted to share it
Ok, so you want to unbrick or downgrade your PSP but don't have a PSP capable of running homebrew apps. No problem! In this tutorial I will show you how to modify the battery's hardware to make it activate service mode.
This is our victim. (http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q32/iam7805/DSCF2040.jpg) Please note that while this concept may work on non-Sony batteries, only official batteries are guaranteed to have the same internals, so we recommend using one.
STEP 1:
The first thing you need to do is obviously crack open the battery. Surprisingly, the battery isn't very hard to get in to. In this picture (http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q32/iam7805/DSCF2041.jpg) you can see that I'm just using a guitar pick to slide in through an edge and slide around the perimeter of the battery to seperate the two halves.
STEP 2:
Next, we need to locate a certain chip. The chip has the model number S93C56 printed on it. We are going to need to desolder pin 5 and lift it off of the board. Here is a magnified view (http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q32/iam7805/DSCF2043.jpg) of the board, which shows where the chip is and which pin needs to be lifted.
Newer batteries have a much smaller board with a different layout. The same chip needs to have the pin lifted, but the chip is in a different position. Once you've located chip S93C56, the rest of the instructions are basically the same. This has been confirmed with the 2200 mAH Official Sony battery.
STEP 3:
If you are not confident in your soldering skills, have a less than steady hand or have a larger-than-optimal sized tip, please desolder the cell pack from the battery first. If you make contact between pins 5 and 6 then you will short ground to +3.6VDC! Not good! When desoldering the cell, only keep the iron on long enough to melt the solder. If you can, use a higher wattage iron so that the tip will be hotter, but you won't transfer as much heat to the cell pack. Remember that heat + Li-Ion battery = large explosion (t3h sux0r5, unless you get in on video. Twisted Evil Seriously though, this operation is not for the faint hearted, and should definitely not be your first soldering experience. I recommend trying your hand on lifting the pins on an N64 CPU chip. Surely if you spend enough time here you have a couple killed N64 mobos laying around. Razz)
Now is actually desoldering the pin. There are a few ways you could do this, but I think my method is the best because its less likely to damage components near by. Use an Xacto knife with a sharp tip and try to put it underneath the pin. Get somebody to hold a soldering iron (WITH A VERY FINE CONICAL TIP!) on the pin. When the solder melts you can pop the pin up with the knife. Be sure not to hold the iron on the board too long to avoid the lithium battery from getting too hot and exploding. When your done it will look something like this. (http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff91/redryno1221/Breakthisone.jpg)
STEP 4:
Finally, close the battery's casing. Use some Krazy Glue to keep it closed, or just use electrical tape around the edges like I did. I don't actually recommend the electrical tape as it makes the battery very snug in the compartment and it takes a bit of force to get it out. You can use the battery just like a regular Pandora's battery. As for getting the Memory Stick files, I can tell you that they are out there and you can find them after a bit of Googling. However, I can't tell you exactly where to find them as they contain copyrighted Sony code, and sharing them is illegal.
How does this work?
The pin that we just lifted was actually the ground pin of the EEPROM. Removing this pin effectively shuts off the EEPROM. When the microcontroller inside the battery tries to read the EEPROM, it will think the EEPROM contains all 1s (in binary). This is because of the pull-up resistors on the data lines. So the microcontroller returns a serial number of 0xFFFFFFFF to the PSP, which then goes into service mode.
Thank you for reading this, and if you have any questions, make sure to post and I'll try to help you!
That's it..... Thanx to Iam7805 for the tut and Richlik for finding it....and myself for posting it. :victory:
P.S. can someone put this in the tut section???

U r a :censored:ing legend mate it works!!! saved me buying one
cheers

Is there a way to tell which version of a battery you have without opening the battery up?
-
all sony batts should have the eeprom in the same place. after market batts are way different so unless you know what eeprom ics look like dont attempt w an after market batt.
Please note that while this concept may work on non-Sony batteries, only official batteries are guaranteed to have the same internals, so we recommend using one.
-
Fried my battery trying to do this. Oh well.
-
can't you just cut the pin. isn't that doing the same thing.
-
the whole point of just lifting the pin is that if you ever want ur normal batt back all you have to do is resolder the pin or even put a switch on it.
-
wow that pretty easy
cheers :P er :D
-

^just as long as it isn't touching it should work...

^in theory you can put a switch on it...
-
great thing mate ,maybe i try build in micro switch .
-
whats a witch and how do you install it.
edit*
wtf!!! i just opened up my psp battery and it doesn't even have the circuit board to create a pandora battery. it has this small, thin circuit board running across the top of the battery. (where the little connectors are) and that circuit board doesn't even have the chip where i can remove the 5th pin. can someone please tell me where i can get a battery that has the type of circuitboard that is in the pic. i really want to make a pandora battery....please help me out. :beg: :help:

yeah, i guess ill get one from there. if it doest have the circuit board that i need, then im going to be pissed.
thanks anyways tho.

thats the one that came with the psp when i bought it. i bought it over a year ago so it shouldn't look like that.
-
No someone must have bought a cheap ripoff of the official batt... does it say sony on the front of the batt (on case)? Where exactly did you buy your psp...
-
the battery says sony on it. i bought my psp brand new at walmart about a year and 1 month ago.

yea i kinda figured so i just took it all and started messing with it and it started to make weird noises so i threw it away and yes i desposed of it properly
im getting me a new one in a couple of days so its all good

Here is a few images from other sites, i dont remember exactly where they came from. You break one of the pin on the IC04 chip (written on the board). Like stated when soldering be careful, lithium batteries are really dangerous when soldering, also try not to bridge pins or anything on there with something metal, so when lifting the pin make sure not to touch the next one. Srry for the big pict.
Slim:
(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi277.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fkk74%2Fdfsa415%2Fslim.jpg&hash=c328f87e59bec935012b0a29e232c8651a9b0f81)
Newer board (newer ones have this bord but does not have the pins, and have epoxy stuff all over):
(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi277.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fkk74%2Fdfsa415%2Fbattery.jpg&hash=24fc91bbc3aed904d92c94e985e44a3d58fbd6f0)
Another way to hardwire (Disconnect the pin mention (red), or solder a wire to the two point that the blue line connect to:
(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi277.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fkk74%2Fdfsa415%2Fpandora.jpg&hash=85d0f065b33b4950130013a90614e9e811fb0529)
Fake Sony, and a few other ones look like this (cannot be pandorized by hardware or software):

Those types of battery's were made months ago.

I accidentally cut into the battery pack. :help: There was a puff of white smoke, and danger of it catching fire? How should I safely dispose of it? I do know that moisture and lithium do NOT mix well.
-
i checked my material safety data sheet for this type of mess and it said anything DRY like cat litter or sand will absorb any moisture to prevent it from reacting violently...
Absorb spilled material with an inert absorbent (dry sand or earth). Scoop contaminated absorbent into
an acceptable waste container. Collect all contaminated absorbent and dispose of according to
directions in Section 13. Scrub the area with detergent and water; collect all contaminated wash water
for proper disposal.
section 13 says:
Battery recycling is encouraged. Do NOT dump into any sewers, on the ground or into any body of water.
Store material Dispose in accordance with local,
state and federal laws and regulations.
Please don't mix lithium residue with chlorinated water@!!!!!
sweep up the majority of the sand/cat litter/lithium hazard... put in bucket and seal.
Boil water first, let it sit to cool before you try to clean up the residue
-
OMFG i never thought of the lithium in them! i have two punctured ones from ps3 controllers just knocking round in one of random electronic scrap draws but i cant find them! how dangerous is that amount of lithium anyway surely theres not alot?
-
>0.5g is a minimal hazard
anything over that is probably bad. Ether way clean it up properly.

it is an official sony battery no matter wat any1 else tells u, they have released a few different types of battery, i have the very same battery as u and it came with my psp wen bought new. Wow, fixed the dead battery I got in my super cheap PSP - just hot plugged it with a 2 volt 47amp lightbulb, took just a couple seconds and it's good as new with a full charge!
Pulled the pin, works great! Now I've got a second Pandora!
