Title: my new sub enclosure / incar PC ***(UPDATE 3.16.10)***
Post by: Tec_ on June 27, 2009, 01:35:01 PM
whats up guys?

ive been sick of how much room my normal sub enclosure takes up in my trunk and ive also been wanting to do some work on my car so i ordered these parts:

MOBO
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813500010 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813500010)

Processor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116069 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116069)

Ram
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820146526 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820146526)

and this SSD
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139007 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139007)

I also started work on the new sub enclosure

mapping out ware the sub is going to go
(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi177.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fw240%2Ftec_in_the_making%2FIMG_0936.jpg&hash=925c3fc52aa6d16daffdbecefe3a3c23aa746386)

and mocking out the new enclosure
(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi177.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fw240%2Ftec_in_the_making%2FIMG_0937.jpg&hash=9bb97b1eb5b3a745ae40f8e86208730dd278ed78)
(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi177.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fw240%2Ftec_in_the_making%2FIMG_0938.jpg&hash=b85abdbe9a11a69953247bc0ef3f86dd1c7c4d84)

its going to get fiberglased in to the left side of my trunk and i will build a custom enclosure for the PC on the right in roughly the same place.

in the next week i will be buying a flip out 7in touchscreen lcd and a DC power supply for the computer.

as long as you can make it so the hinge wont hit the box/enclose it should be fine. great idea by the way.

see the only problem I have right now is where to mount everything in my truck. The only real spot is in the glove box...

Post by: PspKicks316 on June 28, 2009, 04:11:39 PM
Skull that's not a bad idea, actually.

Mount everything in the glove compartment and then over it all you can have a touch screen/panel. Open the glove compartment and BAM! you have a touch panel controlling the computer under it.

I went out and looked at my glove box and it is quite small though. I wonder if one of those mini pc's motherboards would work
Title: Re: my new sub enclosure / incar PC
Post by: PspKicks316 on June 28, 2009, 07:33:54 PM
You could get a 2.5" hard drive, a power supply from HERE (http://www.logicsupply.com/categories/power_supplies/car_power), and a socket 775 mini itx board (here's some (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010200280+1070509908+1075720949&QksAutoSuggestion=&Configurator=&Subcategory=280&description=&Ntk=&CFG=&SpeTabStoreType=&srchInDesc=)), and some RAM. The motherboard would support a Core 2 Duo (and some even support Core 2 Quads) so you'd be set. A lot of those support up to 8gb of RAM, too. On-board graphics would be fine for this situation as well.

or even a pico-itx?
linkety link (http://www.mini-itx.com/store/?c=39)

I might throw my mini-itx into a 360 case soon, since I dont like the look of the case its in now(one of those antec psp cases thingys)

Wait why are you building a PC inside your car

Then you can't really park it anywhere on hot summer days or freezing winter days (depending where you live) and and if someone steals your car thats it... but man I love it  :w00t: that's pretty sick.

WOW That screen is expensive
That looks really good though

Elite:
You can use it for fuel management, control random things, play your music through the car or watch movies. W/e you want
Title: Re: my new sub enclosure / incar PC

You can also use it to immobilise or track your car if it is stolen,so it's actually a security feature more than a security risk.

why would being cold matter?
Because cold affects it just as much as heat...
Title: Re: my new sub enclosure / incar PC
Post by: RoBot1ks on July 04, 2009, 08:48:13 PM
I'm not too sure about the cold effecting it too much. Maybe the motherboard, yes. If they can take liquid nitrogen and hydrogen to cool a cpu while overclocking it to (I think 6.0ghz??) then it shouldn't be effected by 10 degree weather

But you know, I could be wrong  :w00t:

Title: Re: my new sub enclosure / incar PC
Post by: budgray19 on July 04, 2009, 10:26:43 PM
well considering the cpu in my can hit 55 c(131 f)
i dont think teh heats to much to worry about
he might wanna think about adding a vent to where the pc is but a vent that dosnt blow hard
because hes also gotta deal with moisture so thats why winter can be bad
u dont want the moisture and humidity to realy get to the components id say
Title: Re: my new sub enclosure / incar PC

The temperature doesn't effect the CPU, but everything else is effected. I didn't say the CPU...

i wasnt commenting on u
and imo
i dont think 130 wouldnt do much to hardware
of anything the harddrive wouldn't liek it the most

this work makes PSP's look like a walk in the park

on to some more good news
i picked up a new face for the gauges in my car

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi177.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fw240%2Ftec_in_the_making%2FIMG_0958.jpg&hash=0fa68b3d46ef6412a641b3015ebf657bf25bd9a2)

as soon as i can get a hold of my hippie mechanic friend i should be installing it as for the rest of the sound system i hope to fiberglass the trunk this weekend.

as for OS most likely a media version of XP with some sort of car software on it. i will also be geting a OBD2 to USB cable so i can get real time info and more.

so stay tuned

Cold does affect electronics quite badly actually :P

I remember one time I went fishing and it was stupidly cold (Less than 0 degrees C) and the wifi had problems but once I heated it up it worked fine, till it got cold agian

that is incorrect. cold is quite good for solid state electronics. why do you think such an extreme effort is made to cool servers? heat is a form of energy loss and can make your equipment inefficient. scientifically speaking electrons flow better through cold lines and encounter less resistance (a piece of copper will have a higher resistance when its hot and a lower resistance when its cold)

this being said the only thing i have that may be affected by the cold will be my LCD and once it warms up it wont be an issue

i should also mention that i am looking at springs as rims for my car as well as a new bike seat and grips for my new old bike

i dont think i want to sell it (havent made up my minde). i saw the NES PC over in the computer section and i was inspired. i might also be considering a medea extender if better graphics were a option.

its different and suposidly its louder because there is more surface area with a 12in square than with a 12in circle

no offense but i personally hate fiberglass boxes... i personally perfer a 3/4" plywood box.. just remember, the bigger the box the deeper the sound...

the only bad part about fiberglass boxes is the math ans they are never built square and hard to figure.  there is complet mathmatics involved in building a speaker box that will ACCURATLY deliver quality sound, bigger is not better, IDK who ever gave you that idea. when you put a speaker in a box that has 0.5 qubic feet of volume (not much) you will end up with flat sound. this is good for you bass boomers, I guess, but in terms of quality sound it can ruin the music when you play something with a beat that pops as apposed to one that drags, you will notice a big difference

well if it makes any difference to you i actually had 1 aerospace engineer and 1 civil engineer do my volume calculations.

and fiberglass sounds just fine when you put dynamat on it.

Im agreeing I love fiberglass, its very dense and wil produce nice sound, as long as it contains the correct volume. as fro the plywood box=, you never, ever want to use plywood. you can use mdf but not plywood, as it is pourous, and will give the music a bouncing effect.

I meant MDF i was tired that day sorry, but its all prefrence i have a 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee and i have a 3/4" MDF Ported box with 5.80 cubic ft. in the back and it sounds good... though im pushing 1800 Watts RMS at 1 OHM i blew out the PLEXIGLASS window i put in to prevent me shattering the actuall glass window.. hahaa and the bigger the box the more air the subwoofers have to push around in a SEALED BOX therefore creating deeper bass. Sealed Boxes give you better sound Quality, However they do NOT get to be as lous as ported or vented boxes... Ported boxes are typically larger in size but the sound quality is not as good as a sealed box. Sorry for any confusion.
