Title: Two noobish questions...
Post by: Nemesis on November 15, 2007, 02:13:13 PM
ok firstly im more used to software stuff rather than hardware and i dont know much about the insides of a pc so i just wanna find out a bit more...

one question is that when you fit a motherboard in to case and mount it on, do all cases and motherboards have the holes in the same position to screw together or do only some motherboards work with some cases? and the other one is do the internal cables for the power button and stuff come with the case and connect to the motherboard?

im not building a pc i just wanna know this stuff for future reference..

thanks :)

To answer your question,  Yes there are standard hole patterns but there are many types of motherboards.  This makes it crucial in knowing which case to buy.  The standard motherboard most people have is an ATX motherboard.  You would need a ATX case.  The ATX case can also hold micro ATX Motherboards.  Micro ATX cases can not hold ATX cases. ATX boards sizes are about 12" by 10".  and Micro ATX are 9" by 8". There are many more sizes of motherboards but are uncomon.  Question 2 The Power Switch, Power LED,Speaker, reset Switch, HDD LED are preinstalled.  any more questions don't hessiate to ask

Can you not post pointless comments reffering to other people's post?If you don't have anything to contribute then it's spam, which doesn't belong here.

Yes,the leds and switches come preinstalled, but I don't believe they just plug in,unless ALL mobos use the same plugs, then it's unlikely its plug and play.

Maybe I went to indepth.  I'll start over.  There are 2 main style of boards ATX and micro ATX.  The ATX cases can support both boards while micro ATX cases can support only micro ATX.  the holes all should line up if you get the right case and board.  all the power buttons and stuff is preinstalled and all you have to do is plug them into the correct pins which is in the manual of the motherboard.

EDIT: you mentioned micro atx cases, does that mean that standard motherboards fit into smaller pc towers to save space?

yeah thats what i kinda thought. also, if you do want a space saving pc, will all other standard components from a pc fit in (apart from the standard motherboard)?

thanks

they will, not well, but they will. if its your first build its hard to work in such a small space

Your standard Ram, CPU etc. will fit, some GPU's will have a squeeze, along with other PCI Cards.
