I got an xbox at a garage sale today for $10 :tup: but it didn't come with any cables, so I took it to my friend's house and hooked it up and to my surprise it worked! kinda... It won't respond to any controllers and the dvd drive won't open up. all the screws where taken out of the xbox before I bought it but it still looks like everything is there. when you turn it on the set the clock screen comes up but it looks like it freezes from there ( that or it won't respond to any of the controllers). I don't know what's wrong but I thought I would check here first for some intel. Any ideas on what's wrong?

so all the screws were taken out previous to you buying it??
check if all the plugs are in tight, they couldve taken it all apart and not hooked it back up properly

I took it apart yesterday everything is there and it's all connected there is some white stuff on the power supply board and there's a whole bunch of dirt inside. I was thinking maybe someone tried to softmod their xbox and bricked it?

i'm thinking the controller ports are screwed,make sure the controller u have is working and even if it is try other controllers etc.. if u brick during a softmod the xbox doesnt come on in the 1st place so its definitely not that,get a multimeter and test wheter there is power going to the controller ports,also try twiddling the controller down a bit,if that dont solve yer problems,ur xbox is good for parts,hope u can fix it man!

well I took it apart today and put it back together and it worked! :hifive: all the way! I got past the set the time screen and all the controllers work. I don't know what happened but it works so I'm not complaining. :dntknw: However the dvd drive is not working (and it is connected). It just won't open, when I push the button it tries to eject but it still won't open. Any ideas?

cool glad to hear it,take the screws out of the drive and remove the cover to see if there is anything lodged in there,and if there is,remove it,also try the manual eject button just serach on google and u'll find it

My drive is screwy I bought my xbox used to softmod it too try pushing the button and jiggling the drive around. If that doesnt work open it up and try to see if its stuck or something. It sound trivial but I've had slight problems with the drive since I bought it.

Ok i'll do that when I have the time (or screwdriver if it's that star one) but right now I have finals I have to study for so don't expect immediate results

(I know I'm double posting but it's an update so forgive me)
Ok so I opened the dvd drive and took a peek inside and I noticed the white thing which goes to the gears that open the door was too far away and way not making contact with the gears and thus unable to open the door. I put it back in place and hopefully fixed it, I'm getting the cords from my friend at school tomorrow and I'll test it and see if it works.

the white thing is on the seventh picture down. Its the long white thing under the flat white cable on the right side.

Okay guys I got my drive working. It can eject with the button now but it won't read games I tried with 3 different games any suggestions?

laser scratched or out of focus maybe?

I tried to clean with a Q-tip but it still didn't work.

xbox dvd drives are screwy anyway ive gone through loads it got to a point where i could buy an xbox cheaper than a new drive lol but they all break too quickly

While I tried to clean the laser but other than that It still didn't work, maybe later I'll take it apart again and clean it and see if it works again.
